Hiking New Zealand

Fantastic experience: Did the 2024 Northern Island 5 day hike, as I did not have time to do the full north and South Island this time. I was a bit anxious as this was my first time doing a solo trip with a tour group. However it has surpassed my expectations! The hikes, the guides, the food, everything was planned in detail. I have been to NZ south island before, but wanted to do more hiking experience there. I know NZ is tricky, and I don't know much about the flora and fauna of NZ. Mo or Malcom was an excellent guide! he taught us so much more about NZ, which has really humbled me in how little I know about NZ. Vince was our other guide, he is very skilled in everything outdoors, can give you a small meditation session whilst being surrounded in the most serene outdoor places. (if you ask nicely :-P) The lodging, the food, just really perfect! would highly recommend! (also helps if you have a great group)

Fantastic experience: Wow what a trip! We did the 5 day Northern Portion and 3 day Abel Tasman trips. This is by far the most fun, interesting and beautiful trip my husband and I have taken in a long time! As a person that typically says no to a group tour situation I can tell you that we had such a great time with these guys and our group that we are already planning our trip back to do The Milford Trek next year. Our guides Mo and Vince were organized, fun and made transporting 7 people through the North Island on many hikes and scenic spots seem effortless. Mo's encyclopedic knowledge of New Zealand's history and land made the van rides from spot to spot fly by. By the end of the second day we felt like we were on a road trip with close friends. I especially appreciated all of the "off the beaten path" hikes we did that only a local would know about. Hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was by far the highlight of the trip. It's really too hard to describe just how beautiful and at the same time desolate and Mars like the landscape is. Just sign up and do it. Make sure you wear good hiking boots, and say yes to the poles if you have knees that get sore. 19.4km is a lot but sooooooooo worth it! Truly a wonderful journey and I can't wait for the next trip with them:)

They are passionate about their country and the ecosystem there. We learned so much and made friends for life. We hope to return next year to explore the South Island and Hiking New Zealand will be our first call. Highly recommended!!!

Fantastic experience: Joined the north island 5 day hike in March 2024. Amazing guides Malcolm and Vince. super knowledgeable not just about the route but every blade of fern and every animal in the forest. They made sure we were crystal clear on the safety precautions and were upfront about any potential backup plans should weather be uncooperative. Exceptionally educational on the vulcanism of North Island as well. We managed to pack a few diverse landscapes to hike in a short amount of time - fern forests, shrubland, lakes, volcanic plains, waterfalls, caves, and mountains. Being in North Island there was a huge emphasis on Maori culture as well, which was awesome. Amazing group of companion hikers as well from all over the world. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: New Zealand is a beautiful country with many spectacular sights and wonderful people; you'll really need to spend time on both of the big islands to get a feel for what the country offers. This 24-day trip with Hiking New Zealand is a fantastic way to experience it. We had 5 great Kiwi guides along the way. They led hikes, picked the amazing itinerary (not only hiking, but also kayaking and biking), cooked meals, drove the van, and engaged us in a lot of great conversations about the native flora and fauna. This was a trip of a lifetime and I wanted to thank Hiking New Zealand for their expertise and friendship.

Fantastic experience: This was one of the best guided trips I’ve taken in 25 years! We saw so many beautiful places and the pace was “just right.” Our guide, Mo, gets 10/10 marks, all the stars! He was smart, funny, organized, took the time to get to know all of the guests, and communicated clearly and often. He recommended adjustments to the itinerary based on the weather, but always asked for our input before making any changes. I used a different company to tour the South Island. If I’d known then what I know now, I would have used Hiking New Zealand to see both islands!

Fantastic experience: What an amazing trip! This was my first organized tour, and it was wonderful. Our guides, Oli and Caitlin, were kind, knowledgeable, and fun. They adapted hikes to fit the various skill levels in our group, and they kept us informed about plans and changes. Through conversations during the hikes and drives, I learned about New Zealand's culture and natural treasures. The dynamic among the group members was collegial and supportive. I highly recommend Hiking New Zealand!

Fantastic experience: We had the best time! Oli and Caitlin were excellent guides--knowledgeable, flexible, attentive, and fun! When the weather looked to be an issue, their expertise made it possible for us to change things up and have the best experience possible. I really appreciated that they found private moments to check in with each of us to be sure we were feeling safe and happy. And what a stunningly beautiful country. I was moved to tears more than once. Thank you, New Zealand. We will be back.

Fantastic experience: This is an AMAZING 5+ star experience! One of the best hiking experiences of my entire life-- and I have done many backpacking trips around the globe! Beautiful scenery, amazing guides, gourmet food and drink, lovely participants, awesome accommodations. Could not be beat!! Highly, highly recommend!!

Positive experience: We did a trip last year with a group that really gelled and a fantastic tour guide (thanks, Justin). So we booked another one this year and had a group that didn't gel and two tour guides who focused more on each other than the group. We ended up leaving partway through because it just wasn't fun. So it could go either way. Edited: changed to 4 stars because of the very classy response from hiking new Zealand

Fantastic experience: My son and I did the Hollyford Track (one of the Great Walks) with Hiking New Zealand and loved it! The guides, Lauren and Isabella were knowledgeable, friendly and interesting. The hiking was enjoyable and the scenery was beautiful and varied We also liked the accommodation and the tasty and ample food (joking about it being the Hollyfood trail with our lovely new hiking friends). Loved the boatride where we saw dolphins, and enjoyed the helicopter ride over the Milford Sound. Memorable trip for all the right reasons!

Fantastic experience: Even tough I was not able to travel with Hiking New Zealand due to practical reasons, I would highly recommend them and will certainly do so later. Anne was very helpful and patient answering my questions. She was super friendly. I rarely encountered a service like they offer.

Fantastic experience: My adult daughter and I did the 5 day Abel Tasman Hike and sea kayaking in Feb 2023. What a great experience . We had to really push our badies to the limit, as we were both hiking "virgins" in comparison to all the others in the group. Any faults on this trip was of our own doing! Everything was fantastic! The Leaders were great. (A big shoutout to Kevin who carried my backpack over the last hill on the third day - my knight in shining armour) Accommodation, food, everything was great! Highly recommend

Fantastic experience: This was a fabulous trip! We did a customized Uncut and everything was suburb! The guides are knowledgeable, fun and informative. The accommodations were great and nothing surpasses New Zealand for scenery, hiking, and an incredible journey! Hiking New Zealand is a responsive and trustworthy company. Fantastic experience: This is the way to experience and learn about New Zealand’s absolutely magnificent wilderness and history. Lead by our incredibly informative and capable guide, Nikki, we were able to immerse ourselves into nature and hear about how humans have interacted with it over the centuries. The trail is amazing - well maintained and lots of bridges to avoid river crossings. The lodges are excellent - food delicious and the hosts can’t do enough to make you feel welcome. Hot showers and drying rooms proved very handy as our first day was quite wet (best way to see the rainforest in all her glory). Helicopter out into Milford Sound - awesome!

Fantastic experience: 20 years ago, this fantastic company hade only 3 tours. North Safari, West Coast Wilderness and Secret South. During 29 intense days, I made all of them. That was one of the best times of my life, and my first of many following adventurous vacations. I was a middle aged backpacker then, retired now, but off I'll go to Appalachian Mountains next month...thanks HNZ teaching me how to be courageous but safe
