Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience & Tours - Stewart Island: Reviews
Fantastic experience: We had booked the morning Ulva Island birding tour, however weather conditions prevented us from getting across. The guide was very accommodating to work with us and our tight schedule to ensure that we got an excellent birding tour, and we ended up enjoying our tour around the island more than we would have across to Ulva Island, as we were able to see more wildlife, birds, and the island itself than we would have otherwise. Very knowledgeable tour guide and we highly recommend this experience!
Fantastic experience: We booked three outings with Furhana of Ruggedy Range during a September stay on Stewart Island/Rakiura - a boat trip to look for seabirds, a walk round Ulva Island to look for endemic birds and an evening kiwi safari. Despite contending with some pretty bad weather, all of these were really successful and we saw everything we could have hoped for: penguins, close-up albatrosses, spoonbills, weka, kaka, yellowheads, saddlebacks and a kiwi that walked past us just a few yards away. As well as being completely committed to the wellbeing of the birds and other wildlife, Furhana is a skilled and expert guide who spares no effort to make each outing a success - even if it means teaching the clients how to walk quietly in the dark! If you want the best chance to see the exciting birds that the island can offer, we can 100% recommend Ruggedy Range.
Hello Alistair - you were so wonderful and easy going regarding your expectations and what the weather was throwing at us that it made it alot easier for me to guide your family and yourself. Needless to say - the weather hasn't improved since your visit, but we are still doing our best and I am sure as spring continues we will get finer days. Thank you so much for sharing the photos. I hope you all managed to enjoy the rest of your travels in New Zealand with more bird sightings along the way. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Have never tried bird watching before but what a wonderful experience it was!! Went with my older brother, super cool learning about plants and birds from Furhana still can’t believe she recognized a bird by the sounds it was making when it was foraging on the floor I was totally blown away by this. Furhana was an amazing guide that kept us interested the whole time!! Definitely deserves 5 star review purely because of her vast knowledge of plants and birds
Akiyah - what a lovely review! Thank you so much. It was great to see your interest and smiles at the birds, sea lion and beautiful flora we are lucky to have here on Ulva Island. I hope you will continue to get out more in nature and gain the experience and understanding to share the treasures you find with others. Best wishes for your teaching career - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Easy 5 stars, Furhana has now inspired a 20yr old into bird watching and flora. We were thoroughly impressed by her vast knowledge and recognition of bird sounds, we saw many amazing things. If we visit again, we’ll surely book again. Thanks for the amazing experience! Hunter S
Hunter - thank you so much - your review means alot to me especially if it inspires you to take a greater interest in nature. I loved having you on my trip and sharing the knowledge with you all. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We do an Ulva Island tour. Furhana was a super knowledgeable guide and took care to understand what our group wanted to see. She has a deep knowledge of the local natural history and clearly loves sharing.
Many thanks Karen - We are lucky to have so much wonderful natural history to share with our guests. I really appreciate the review. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Very informative and great guide on Kiwi spotting operator not to mention a skilled water taxi/tour skipper.
Thank you so much - it is really nice to have the chance to do so many different tours especially having our own water taxi so we can offer more to our customers. Pleased you enjoyed the experiences with us. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: I can really recommend the evening kiwi spotting guided tour! After hiking the Rakiura track and not seeing any kiwi we were so lucky to see them with Furhana. She has extensive knowledge about the kiwi, so much that she actually is able to identity an individual during our night, just wauw! The tour begins with an informative talk to prepare and make sure you get the most out of seeing them. I learned so much! Also she explains the clear guidelines how to behave around kiwi as to not threaten them. This is to ensure that we don’t interfere with their natural behavior and also make it possible to observe them closely if you’re lucky. They are so fascinating and precious! If you’re looking for a responsible way to see kiwi in a small group definitely go with Ruggedy!
Hi Laura - many thanks for coming on my tour and for sharing a lovely experience with the two kiwi we were fortunate to see. They are amazing creature and we have so much more to learn about the. Best wishes for a relaxing journey back home - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Furhana is brilliant! Absolutely recommend booking your Stewart Island tours with Ruggedy Range. My husband and I did 3 tours with them recently (kiwi spotting, Ulva Island birding and Pelagic birding) and we spent all that time with Furhana. We were thoroughly impressed with her skill as a tour guide/ornithologist/botanist/water-taxi skipper/tour van driver - it was a one-woman show; she did everything for us and gave us some unforgettable experiences of Stewart and Ulva Islands. What we loved most was how deeply Furhana cares about protecting the unique, wonderful, endangered wildlife here. During our kiwi-spotting tour, she taught our group how to move as quietly as possible and took all the necessary precautions to ensure first and foremost, that we respect the kiwi and try not to disturb it (to the extent we can). We spotted 2 kiwis and were able to view one of them for a long time with Furhana's guidance. She made sure that everyone in the group got a chance to view the birds. She has been a guide for over 25 years and has an intimate knowledge of local birds, birdsongs, trees and regional history. During our Ulva island walk, she found the best angles for the photographers in our group to take their bird photos, but also made sure the rest of us could watch the birds. We learned so much about the native flora and fauna of these incredible islands because we had the best tour guide, thank you Furhana!
Thank you so much Arya - it was wonderful to have you join our three tours with your husband and sharing in our delightful wildlife and natural flora and natural history There is so much to learn and I hope a more rewarding experience for our customers whether from New Zealand or overseas. I am grateful to customers like yourselves that understand what I am trying to achieve and willing to share you experience of our tours with others. Best wishes for more birding and natural history adventures - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We used this company to organise our ferry crossing, accommodation and nature experience on Ulva Island. Would absolutely recommend them. We had a hassle-free stay on Stewart Island. The highlight was the tour Ruggedy provided on Ulva Island. Don't go with anyone else. Her knowledge is second to none. You will miss a lot without a guide. Thanks Ruggedy
Thank you so much Karen - you were so flexible and easy going. Your willingness to work in with the weather helped us provide you with the Ulva Island tour when we were able to get the best available weather. We greatly appreciate your review, many thanks for taking the time to share your experience of our tour. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: I did this experience in mid-December and to be honest, I cannot believe we saw anything when it was such a windy/rainy night on Stewart island. Our group was incredibly lucky to have Furhana to guide us — she made it a terrific experience; I’ve always wanted to see a kiwi and I learned more than I ever dreamed! The kiwi is a very special bird. Thank you, Furhana!
I am so pleased Josh that we were able to search for and see a kiwi for you to enjoy during our wild and windy weather day. Our perseverance paid off. I am pleased that the information we shared will help you appreciate this special bird even more. Best wishes and thank you so much for your review - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Furhana has encyclopedic knowledge of everything on Ulva Island and the trip was a delight. She was good at managing time, rotating people to the front of the group, giving clear answers, etc. Scheduling required a little juggling despite an advance booking, but it all worked out.
Thank you so much Bob - and am am sorry about the rescheduling as we worked with a variables including the weather. Delighted that you enjoyed the trip and learnt about and enjoyed our birds and flora. Best wishes - Furhana
Positive experience: Rented a sleeping bag. Lacks a bit service. Was a bit harsh getting me off the phone and didn't call back later as said. Sleeping bag was old and not best but did its job. Would probably look for another solution next time.
Hi Chris - thank you for your review. We are sincerely sorry we did not meet your expectations. However, the sleeping bags we hire are good quality, 4 season, feather bags made by a reputable company - Macpac. We have never had a complaint about them being old or not the best. We find your comments strange given the positive comments we have had from many customers. All our sleeping bags are in good order and fit for the purpose of hire for only $50 for 3 days. As far as trying to get you off the phone, I was in the middle of driving a boat and starting a tour, you were not clear that you wished to provide your credit card details for payment but kept asking if the office would be open when you arrived. Given that we had sent you reservation details and asked you to visit to pick up your gear on the date you needed it - we were open. This is an incredibly busy time of the year for us, with many people leaving their bookings to the last minute. We have to prioritise every day and serve customers that are in the shop. We had already sent you reservation details so that you were assured of renting the sleeping bag and able to do your hike. If I did not ring back it was not because I did not want to, but because I was handling a multiple number of tour bookings, phone calls and enquiries and we had run out of time the day you tried to call me to reach out to you. We ask visitors to be reasonable and considerate during peak tourist times and especially as we reach the Christmas and New Year holiday period - it is not too much to ask for. Best wishes for Christmas the the New Year to you. Furhana - Owner / Operator).
Fantastic experience: Excellent tours both for South Island Brown Kiwi and the rare endemics of Ulva Island. Small groups help everyone to get great views of the birds. The guide is super knowledgeable and skilled.
Many thanks for your review. We are glad you enjoyed the small group and the guides knowledge and skills, which helps us provide the best possible tours. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Fantastic experience: We had a brilliant experience with Furhana at Ruggedy Range. We hired gear from her to do the Rakiura track including sleeping bags, bowls and mugs - everything was clean and in good condition. Furhana showed us how everything worked. We then booked a kiwi tour which was fantastic - Furhana taught us loads about the amazing kiwi and we really appreciated how she put the kiwi first and genuinely considered their welfare as well as trying to get us a good sighting of them. We would recommend Ruggedy Range for anyone looking to hire kit or do an experience tour on Stewart Island. Thank you Furhana! Lily, Patrick and Alice.
Many thanks Lily - we have been really busy and slow in replying to our reviews, but want you to know we appreciate the time and effort you put into the review, hiring our gear and coming on one of our kiwi spotting tours. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Furhana
Fantastic experience: We had an amazing visit to Stewart Island thanks to Furhana and Ruggedy Range. We did a kiwi spotting tour and a trip to Ulva and just had a great experience. We saw kiwi on Stewart and all sorts of other birds and plants on Ulva. Furhana is knowledgeable and a great guide. Definitely recommend booking in advance and reaching out early so she can speak to you about possible times and dates.
Many thanks Michael and especially for being flexible with your timings over our off-season. We had some lovely trips and got to see so much wildlife - it was great to be able to share what we have once again with our international visitors. Best wishes for some more memorable wildlife moments - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We booked a kiwi spotting tour with Ruggedy Range, and we were not disappointed! Furhana's knowledge and respect for the kiwi is abundant, and I appreciated the care she took in guiding us to view the kiwi. It was clear that viewing the kiwi while being conscious of not disturbing them was a big priority, which made us feel like we chose the right tour company.
Many thanks Christine - It was great to have Glenn and yourself join us on our kiwi spotting tour last night and to know that you appreciated our style of running the tour in order to ensure kiwi are not disturbed. They are amazing birds and deserve the care and respect. So thanks again and very best wishes for more nature discoveries - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We joined Furhana's kiwi spotting experience and were very impressed by her knowledge, passion and commitment to the protection of kiwi on Stewart Island. We were educated on the use of red lights and how to approach and watch kiwi respectfully. We felt privileged to have seen kiwis completely wild in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to spot four kiwi and loved our experience with Ruggedy Range!
Hi Clare and Hannah, many, many thanks for choosing us and for your appreciation of how we are trying to run our tours in order to ensure kiwi are not disturbed.. During our tour we observed non-guided people in the forest using their cellphones with white bright lighting within a metre of a kiwi and that really makes me feel sad and upset.. However, I am grateful that you came on our tour, learnt how to respect kiwi and no doubt will tell others to do the same. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Two fantastic trips with Furhana. A day on Ulva Island and then the three day Rakiura Great Walk. Furhana is incredibly knowledgeable and a very generous host. Our group was quite awestruck by her knowledge of birds, trees and the whole area. The food on the tramp was excellent and Furhana looked after us brilliantky. Highly recommend Ruggedy Range. whole area.
Hello Jeanie - it was lovely to share time with you on Ulva Island and the Rakiura Great Walk during our tours. We were fortunate with our birds on our travel to Ulva Island and during the tour and especially the lovely weather on the Rakiura Track. We love sharing our knowledge in small groups and have taken care to ensure our clients are well looked after - so thank you for acknowledging this in your feedback. It means alot to us. Best wishes for all your advocacy work. Once again thank you for your kind and generous feedback. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We very much enjoyed the Kiwi spotting tour. It was such a privilege to see Kiwi’s with such a knowledgeable guide. If we had been staying longer on the island we certainly would have done another tour with the same company.
Hello Alison - lovely to get this feedback and thank you so much for coming on our tour to learn about the kiwi and what makes it very special. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We were travelling with friends, they suggested we explore around Oban with Furhana from Ruggedy Range as they had been on a tour with her 15 years ago and had found it excellent. We took the Ulva Island tour on Saturday and the Wildlife Cruise on Sunday. Both were exceptional. Furhana is an outstanding guide. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the islands and their flora and fauna. We were always in the right place at the right time, saw everything we wanted, learnt heaps and had great fun to boot. Our friends said it was even better second time round. Two awesome experiences, Ruggedy Range rocks.
Hi Charles - we are so deeply grateful to your friends for suggesting us for your tours with them after their first experience with me 15 years ago. It is heartwarming to know that we are remembered so well. This year we have seen many former clients return to take another tour with us - which is a big moral boost for us. We are so very pleased that you enjoyed the tours with us and saw and learnt so much. Best wishes for your time in New Zealand. Kind regards - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Probably THE BEST guide on Stewart Island, knowledgeable and knew right where to find the elusive kiwis. We saw several the night we went out, even tho conditions were not optimal. Also saw penguins, deer and a possum.
Thank you for this review. We have worked hard over the years to gain a sound knowledge of the behaviour of kiwi. Delighted to be able to share our experiences with you with good outcomes. Many thanks for coming on our tour. Best wishes - Furhana
Positive experience: This review only for shuttle service. Owner seems like did worry about getting Covid so she asked every one to use sanitizer before hop on. She also direct us to put our bag in certain place in vehicle. the feeling from us she was not so politely and treat us as kids but not using common sense communication. The cancellation policy not very flexible. However we did a great trip still thanks for this service.
Hi Ringo, thank you for using our service. I am sorry you were not happy about us following our COVID protocols given the increase in COVID in tourism hotspots. It is so sad to see the lack of empathy towards staff in the tourism sector when we are just trying to do our job. Your group of 7 cancelled a booking for 1 person and wanted a $10 refund on Boxing Day, we followed our cancellation policy to cover the significant time we had spent on a simple booking for a shuttle at last years rates. You were made aware of our cancellation policy at the time of booking. Your group was also over 15 minutes late for your shuttle, we did not charge for this inconvenience. We always seat our clients in the mini-van first before placing the packs down and this was explained before your group entered the vehicle. Again I am sorry you were not fully satisfied. Best wishes for your New Year.
Fantastic experience: We had a great experience and got to spend time with 3 kiwi and saw a 4th crossing the road! We initially contacted another tour operator but they would not take kids on the night walks, which was frustrating. Farhana was open to bringing kids, given they could keep quiet, and open to understanding that if they weren’t interested or tired they could hang out in the van. Starting off with an information session was helpful. We went searching and came up empty at a few sites but Farhana didn’t lose confidence. We doubled back to an early site and had our first encounter - about 20 minutes of watching a male feed near the beach. Farhana is good about communicating what she needs for everyone to do and because of this she gets results!! Our kids were so excited that they wanted to stay out late to see more!! Thank you!!
Many thanks Adam - I was delighted to have you and your family come along - our chance encounter as I drove past proved a good one for all of us. The kids were great and very well behaved. It was delightful that they wanted to spend more time with kiwi and we were rewarded with another lovely sighting. I am so glad you did not miss out. Best wishes for your family and it made my work easier that the kids were interested - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Lovely experience touring with Furhana! We saw a bunch of kiwi. Furhana is very knowledgable about kiwi and their environment, and was able to answer all of our questions about their behavior. She was very careful to respect their environment. I highly recommend this tour. :)
Hello Acacia - many thanks for coming on my tour and highlighting our focus in your review - our respect for kiwi and the environment. Kiwi spotting takes alot of time, focus and care and we were suitably rewarded. I am pleased you enjoyed our tour. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Awesome trip Furhana is a amazing guide with huge knowledge Loved the experience and the tranquility
Thank you so much Ian for joining me on our guided Rakiura Great Walk. You took it in your stride and made the most of the experience, taking time to reflect and enjoy the space. I loved your easy going attitude, your immense friendliness and kindness to other participants. Best wishes and very much looking forward to eating your orange / almond cake! - Furhana
Negative experience: Knowledgeable guide but very inflexible re operating times
Hi Robin - Thank you for your review and I appreciated meeting Maureen and yourself. However, I am sorry, but I feel your review is incredulous. 27th October was your preferred date, but you offered to do the tour on the 28th or 29th for weather reasons. As it happened the weather was not good on the 27th or 28th, the best weather was on the 29th and you were pleased that we did the tour on the 29th. I kept in touch with you throughout the days you were in Stewart Island to give you an update on the weather. I also operated the morning tour so that you got the best out of your day in Stewart Island. You also informed me that you were glad we did the tour on the best day you were in Stewart Island. I am sorry, but I am unable to make sense of your comment. Best regards - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Furhana is an extraordinarily knowledgeable (ornithology, botanics, history, etc.) and helpful guide. She was extremely determined to find Kiwis for us on the Kiwi spotting tour in particular. The Ulva island trip was another wonderful experience with a huge variety of birds and plants and interesting stories and explanations. I really appreciated that Furhana always fully respected nature and wildlife and successfully explained/transferred that to all participants (being quiet, step technique, using red light, etc.). To my mind this is a fantastic tour operator and really worth the money, I highly recommend it. Thank you very much, I learnt a lot.
Hello Rico - I very much enjoyed meeting you and having you come on my tours. Thank you for choosing Ruggedy Range and understanding our point of difference. I am glad you appreciated the need to respect nature. So many people are indifferent to the needs and sensitivities of our wildlife. I firmly believe that more could be done to help visitors understand and appreciate nature and wildlife through informative tours. This is what I strive to do and am thankful to visitors like yourself who choose us. Best wishes for the rest of your New Zealand holiday - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We did a cruise and guided walk with Furhana from Ruggedy Range. We had a really nice time, saw many birds and learned a lot about the flora. She is very knowledgeable and generous of that knowledge about plants, birds and history! Definitely recommend! Thanks again!
Many thanks Catherine. It was lovely to meet your parents and yourself and to hear your international accents and language being spoken in NZ once again. It was lovely day for our cruise and it went too quickly.... Hope to see you again in Stewart Island. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: We did the Kiwi experience and were very successful, luckily seeing three kiwi! Furhana was very informative and knowledgeable. We were part of a small group and Furhana created a patient and calm atmosphere that allowed us all opportunity to see the kiwi. We were very happy and she made sure we had the best chance of seeing a kiwi.
Hi Alexandra, thank you so much for your review. Seeing kiwi is a privilege and I never take it for granted. These birds are special, vulnerable and enigmatic and I hope that you have gained understanding and respect for this unique bird and especially learnt how to behave around wildlife in order to minimise disturbance, with an aim to always put wildlife first. Best wishes for more wildlife adventures. Kind regards - Furhana
Positive experience: We did a three-hour kiwi spotting tour last week and unfortunately didn't see any kiwis. Furhana kindly offered us another try free of charge the next night but we still didn't see anything. This wasn't down to Furhana's lack of trying or knowledge - or great humour and efforts in keeping our spirits up! The tour was not as expected and we ended up sitting in the minivan driving along the same roads for five hours. Although it was a nice opportunity to chat - we didn't stop for any short walks to search for kiwi, listen to bird calls at night, or gaze at the magnificent southern stars on clear nights - as described on the website.
Hi Joseph - Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you were not happy about your experience. The night of your tour we had southerly winds and hail and snow (spring weather)! It wasn't an easy night to get you out to gaze at the stars and it was by no means a clear night. In particular it was a difficult night for kiwi spotting, but I did the trip because I expected that it was going to clear, but it didn't clear up. It ended up being too cold and not a good night for kiwi. I offered you all a free trip the next night and I cannot remember a time when in two trips in a row we did not see kiwi, but it was a cool damp night and I wanted to ensure you were all warm. I remember offering the opportunity for everyone to get out of the van to stretch their legs on the first night after you had asked to do this, but your partner did not stay out for more than a few minutes. I worked very hard to look in as many places as I could, but it was not our luck. As it happened the night after I saw two. There is alot to consider with kiwi spotting and they are wild birds. However, please be aware - we are not responsible for the weather. I hope you will get the chance to come to Stewart Island and see kiwi in the wild.... Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Ruggedy Range and Aihe cruises offer the best walking tours of Ulva Island. Our host, Furhana, was knowledgeable about the wildlife and vegetation and interweaved this into the stories about the birds that live on this predator free island. A unique experience, thank you for sharing. John ;)
Many, many thanks for coming on my tours and for your lovely sense of humour and fun. I had a memorable trip with Dorothy and yourself and am still smiling. The Island is not the same without you! Best wishes for your endeavours with the Sculpture Park near Hamilton - Furhana
Positive experience: Furhana shared some of her extensive knowledge with us on an Ulva island trip, part of the raikura great walk and kiwi spotting.
Many thanks Teresa - I appreciated you contacting us for suggestions on tours and taking part in several options we had bookings for during your visit. I hope that Peter and yourself enjoyed your time here in Stewart Island and on your cycle adventures in the rest of New Zealand.
Fantastic experience: Amazing guide and kiwi tour! Fantastic experience and the guide really knows what she is doing. Definitely worth checking out
Thank you so much Henk. It was lovely to have you join our tours and thrilled you appreciated your experience. Best wishes for more wildlife adventures - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend them! We had an amazing night kiwi tour with Furhana and spent 40 minutes with a kiwi in the wild!
Many thanks Pooja. Have received a nice video from Lynsey - what a pleasure to have a kiwi feeding happily around us and then poking its bill into Alun's shoe. He will never forget that. Thank you to you and your friends for choosing our Evening Eco Watch / Kiwi Spotting trip. It was a great night to be out! Best wishes - Furhana
Negative experience: Rude, unwelcoming service and expensive
Hi Emma - I am sorry but I do not remember the interaction with you. A difficult time for everyone right now trying to get people to comply with the COVID-19 rules whilst they travel. There is more work and stress for business owners trying to ensure compliance and having to deal with rude and inconsiderate visitors, who are thankfully balanced out by those who show kindness and empathy. My tours are not expensive when you take all considerations into account including the years of guiding expertise and local knowledge and compare what you are getting from others in terms of time, money, small groups and the expertise offered. You are however, welcome to your thoughts and feelings - thank you for sharing them.
Fantastic experience: Furhana is an excellent guide. After 26 years on the island she is a mine of information. We did the bus tour with local history and Ulva Island forest and bird 4hour tour. Furhana knew just where to find the most threatened native birds and we were treated to the sight of the rare rifleman, saddlebacks, brown creeper, kakabeak, yellow head and greywarbler, as well as parakeet, oyster catchers and weka. Her knowledge of the trees and bush plants revealed how the forest works cooperatively. Stunning. Thank you.
Thank you so much Carolyn for taking time to comment and especially for choosing my tours. Whilst alot of people may visit Ulva Island on their own, many miss out on an great opportunity to learn more about New Zealand's unique environment. I am really glad you enjoyed your time and learned alot. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Lovely tour guide with extensive knowledge of kiwi and Stewart Island who catered to the only evening we were available. We had three encounters with kiwi, the third being past the finish time of our tour however Furhana wanted us to have the best experience possible. Would highly recommend this tour and will be booking other tours with her on our next trip. Thank you so, so much for a wonderful evening! Aimee & Michael.
Hi Aimee and Michael - I enjoyed my time with you and was happy to make sure you got a video recording for your children to see. You were both really great to guide and thank you for understanding the sensitivities of kiwi. Seeing junior and adult kiwi on the same nice is pretty special. I really look forward to meeting you in Stewart Island. Best wishes for the rest of your holidays.
Fantastic experience: Furhana, was amazing we went on 2 excursions one to Ulva Island we did the 3 1/2 hour tour there is no way we would have seen the wide variety of birds on our own, her knowledge of the rain forest, it’s history, and plant life was so extensive, and recognizing the bird calls, identification and then pointing us in their direction was awesome, the time flew by. In the afternoon we cruised Paterson Inlet, again rich with history and went over to the whaling station, both trips are a must if your in Stewart Island and definitely check out Ruggedy Range these trips are certainly so much more incredible with a guide like Furhana.
Many, many thanks Debbie - I was pleased your group took time to walk the short distance to my office from your accommodation to find out what I could offer and when best to do the tours to fit in with the weather. I really enjoyed my time with your group as you were all really interested in doing a guided tour on Ulva Island and learning. The photos your group took on the day are a lovely reminder of a beautiful day on Ulva Island and on our Whalers' Base Cruise & Guided Walk. Best wishes - Furhana
Positive experience: Furhana was enthusiastic and informative about the history and natural history of the island. She accommodated us on a day when she was already busy and put together the best trips for us in the time available. Much appreciated!
Many thanks Sarah. It would have been nice to have a more time to assist you and give you more time. I appreciated having the custom and glad I was able to make something happen in between other trips. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: I found it good to navigate around.
Many thanks for our review. We are pleased it was helpful. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Furhana was an amazing experienced and knowledgeable guide who was very passionate about making sure everyone had a really good experience. She keeps the group under control so that people don’t make noise and therefore scare the kiwis and birds away which I really appreciated. I would really highly recommend Ruggedy Range. We did the Kiwi spotting and Ulva island with them and they were far better than the other tour we did on Steward Island with another company.
Thank you for choosing Ruggedy Range and highlighting what we offer. I really appreciated not only your custom but also your appreciation of nature and wanting to get the best experience on your visit . We care about each of our clients and how we deliver our tours to them. We also care about our wildlife and how best to show them to our visitors. We enjoy being a truly nature orientated business!
Fantastic experience: Done! Rakiura Track, Stewart Island. Three days of hills (many, many, many “undulations”), valleys, streams, beaches, forests, sunshine, mist, rain, and mud. Not to mention the numerous stories, jokes, and outright fabrications shared amongst our small group of eight wonderful companions. We were a mixed group - two in their 40s, two in their 50s, two in their 70s, and one in his 80s. The track is quite tricky at times and is certainly a test of fitness and stamina. But, accompanied by our Ruggedy Range guide, Furhana, we were in excellent hands. Some of us also went to Ulva island the day after completing the track. Again, with Furhana, we saw so much that we might otherwise have missed (including the afternoon kiwi!). Many thanks to our very professional guide, Furhana, and Ruggedy Range for making it all such a marvellous experience.
Certainly a great bunch of clients to have the pleasure of guiding on the Rakiura Great Walk and on Ulva Island. Thank you so much for the review and also for supporting Ruggedy Range during a complicated time of uncertainties for everyone. I appreciated all of you and your help and support especially during the Rakiura Great Walk. Hopefully I will see you all again sometime. Best wishes - Furhana
Fantastic experience: Great experience. We did several trips with Ruggedy Range - kiwi spotting, Ulva Island and a full day walk. Furhana is very professional and very knowledgable. Would definitely recommend

Fantastic experience: We did a small van tour of Stewart Island. Furhana was great, excellent knowledge of the island. Highly recommended.
Hello Shirleigh - great to have you come on our small group Island Culture Scenic Road tour in Stewart Island - its a terrific way to get a good overview and especially if it is a first visit or you have a short time. Thank you for your support.
Fantastic experience: We did the 1/2 day tour Ulva Island- the owner operator guide was very professional and shared a wealth of knowledge about fauna & flora. We all definitely recommend this company.
It was wonderful to have New Zealanders supporting this small business and appreciative of their native fauna and flora. A pleasure to guide, many thanks for booking my tour.
Fantastic experience: The bus tour was great. I learned a lot about Stewart Island. Thank you for operating in August. :)
Many thanks Georgia it was great to have you join us and really appreciate the support right now from New Zealanders.
Fantastic experience: Incredible experience and professionalism/friendliness beyond what we could have asked for. Would recommend 10/10.

Fantastic experience: Furhana was a very good guide
Many thanks Lucinda - it has taken a while to reply with all the changes we are dealing with right now, but wanted to say that we appreciated your custom. Stay well and safe.
Fantastic experience: Do not miss a tour or two with Ruggedy Range. Fantastic experience for any level hiker/birder/naturalist. We did the Kiwi spotting and Ulva Island tours and they were excellent. It’s not just a tour. You gain some knowledge about the flora and fauna from a well educated guide. Been to NZ three times so far and this was the best!!!
Hello Charles - thank you so much for coming on our tours and for your appreciation of what we offer. Hope you are staying well and somewhere safe and maybe someday get to visit our beautiful shores again.
Fantastic experience: We did the Island Scenic Tour, Ulva Island Birds and Forest, and the Pelagic Bird Cruise. Furhana is a brilliant guide, she is very knowledgeable and passionate. My wife is mildly disabled and Furhana looked after her and made sure she didn't miss a thing. If you are coming to Stewart Island, we thoroughly recommended booking your tours with Furhana at Ruggedy Range...she really made our stay memorable. Like a previous reviewer, we too discovered Furhana loves chocolate !!
Thank you Ian and Kay for your unconditional support of a tiny little business. You both brought your lovely smiles and easy going nature which helps to make my work more rewarding. A pleasure to meet both of you and show you my 'backyard'. Hope you are keeping well and staying safe and looking forward to seeing you both here again some day.
Positive experience: My wife and i very much enjoyed the two tours we did however the business itself seemed pretty disorganized.
Thank you Doug for taking time to make a review. I am glad you enjoyed our Pelagic Birding and Evening Eco Watch / Kiwi Spotting trips. During the time you made a booking in October 2019, my boat driver had a non-planned emergency operation and was off work for 8 weeks. I have read our correspondence and note that I highlighted this to you. He returned to work a week before your trip. During his absence, I was skippering the boat, running the office, carrying out guided tours and trying to keep up with all the emails. Operating a business in a semi-remote location is not easy with only 400 residents all of whom are busy and almost impossible to get staff help at short notice. My business is small - part of the beauty of receiving a more personalised experience on your tours. We do not have big business resources. I am sorry that there were delays in replying to your emails during a time when enquiries for the our forthcoming tourist season were at their peak and I had a critical staff member off sick. However, I did my best under the circumstances and you received a detailed itinerary in good time for your tours. I wish you and Kate best wishes for the New Year and we did appreciate your custom.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic knowledge and passion
Thank you so much Henny. Great to share our special corner of the world with appreciative clients.
Fantastic experience: Furhana from Ruggedy Range might be one of the if not the best guide on Stewart Island. Although I have not tried the rest of the tours for comparison, from observation, she showered us with knowledge that she has over the years on bird watching and on nature. Thanks again for the wonderful experience!
Many, many thanks for your review. I really enjoy sharing the years of guiding and observing wildlife with my clients. Thank you for coming on my tour.
Fantastic experience: The guided tours that we joined (Evening Kiwi Spotting and Ulva Island Bird and Forest) are the best tours that we have joined. Furhana (the guide) is so knowledgeable that we all learned so much from her. The places and scenes were gorgeous. And the chances to see Kiwi, Kea, Tui, Stewart Island Robin were very memorable experience. Furhana has very detailed yet interesting explanations about the plants and animals. And we could feel her enthusiasm and respects of the nature around, which I think is of utmost importance for such guided nature tours, for people to learn and respect our mother nature
Many thanks Albert we loved having Clarence and yourself on our tours - a pleasure to guide with your appreciation and enthusiasm for what we had to show you.
Fantastic experience: We had a Kiwi spotting tour with Furhana. She is very serious and passionate about the wildlife. We had a thorough introduction of Kiwi birds and how to best spot them. We encountered a Kiwi and traced it until it settled down. We had a extremely good view of the Kiwi for a long period! I am so happy to have chosen this tour, I highly recommend it!
Many thanks for choosing our tour. We focus entirely on kiwi on this tour and work hard to make sure clients get some great views.
Fantastic experience: Did the kiwi-spotting tour, which was amazing! Good information before we went and instructions on correct behaviour. Well worth the price.
Many thanks Carol. All those instructions help when as kiwi are so sensitive and we try to give our clients the best experiences whilst making sure kiwi are not disturbed.
Fantastic experience: Furhana has the most amazing knowledge of the flora and fauna of Stewart Island. An intelligent and serious tour by someone who knows what she is talking about, is very experienced and shows so much passion for what she is doing. I have to Stewart Island several time and so regret not doing the Ulva Island and Kiwi tours before. Make sure you book ahead of time so you and Furhana can plan for the best weather. Highlights were seeing a Saddleback and finally a kiwi in the wild!
It has taken me a while to reply, we have been busy at Ruggedy Range Wilderness Experience. However, I just wanted to say a big thank you for your review and for coming our our Ulva Island Birds & Forest Guided Walk and Evening Eco Watch / Kiwi Spotting trip.
Fantastic experience: A really great tour in Oban. We saw many great spots and got great recommendations fur the rest of the day. Big thank you to Furhana!
Thanks Joschua for coming on our Island Culture Scenic Road Tour - its a great introduction and a way of finding out how to maximise your time in Stewart Island.
Fantastic experience: We booked this four months prior from Australia. Communication with Furhana was excellent and she was very reliable. Our half day bird and flora trip to Ulva Island was a fantastic experience. Furhana taught us about bird watching and we sighted over 10 different native NZ birds including some endangered species. The flora we saw was incredible and her historical and botanical knowledge interested us all. We highly recommend this tour - you will not be disappointed.
Heather many thanks for coming on our Ulva Island Birds & Forest Guided Walk. As a small business we work hard on our tours and in making sure you get the best experience. We appreciated that you choose our trip.
Fantastic experience: We had a fantastic time with Furhana on Stewart Island where we did the driving birding tour. Not only did we see plenty of the local bird life, but the knowledge of the island and wildlife was beyond anything we had experienced with other companies. We were scheduled to do kiwi spotting with another operator, which was subsequently cancelled, after hearing this Furhana offered to add on some kiwi spotting to our tour which was really appreciated! Personal touches like text communication prior to our tour and Furhana's professionalism made this both an easy experience, and an unforgettable one. 100% recommend to anyone and hope to go on a tour with Ruggedy again in the future.
Thank you Sam for coming on our new Birding Road Tour - it is a relaxing way to enjoy the scenic spots whilst birding. Thank you for choosing us.
Fantastic experience: Furhana does a wonderful job as tour guide on Ulva island. If you want to see birds and the fauna of Ulva island go with her ...
Hi Alex - greatly appreciate your review and custom.
Fantastic experience: We chose the Ruggedy Range four hour tour of Ulva Island. It cost a little more than some of the shorter tours, but well worth it. Furhana led our party through the majesty of the pristine rainforest, ears and eyes attuned to the environment. She knew every birdcall, every tiny plant, every massive tree, and her knowledge and passion flowed out and into us all. My few photographs are a poor show. There were many more birds, some of them literally a metre away, including a saddleback, and a robin Furhana charmed down from the trees. She paid careful attention to each member of the group, making certain everyone had a good view of everything. She made sure we trod quietly in the wilderness, respected the birds and plants, were one with the forest. And after, as we bounced across the bay in the water taxi, she encouraged us to sing, tell stories, entertain the boat driver, who rewarded us by pointing out a trio of blue penguins. I left a half block of hazelnut chocolate for her. We discovered Furhana loves chocolate!
Thank you Peter, the shorter tours include one that is less than an hour on Ulva Island, we main half day tour offers 4 hours on Ulva Island and $ for time provides greater value for money along with highly experienced guides with huge amounts of local knowledge. We appreciated that your group choose to do our tour and provide such wonderful feedback + chocolates for the guide!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely spectacular! Furhana was a simply amazing guide who really knew her stuff! Got some fantastic pictures of birds, as well as lots of time to just appreciate the view. I do not regret for a minute taking this tour - Furhana did a wonderful job of talking about both the birds and the environment, both of which were stunning! She is obviously passionate about the island, and I'll be recommending this to anyone I know who goes to Stewart Island.
Hi Jay, we are glad you got some great pictures and thank you for sharing your thoughts on our tour - we really appreciated you choosing us.
Fantastic experience: Penguins and Yellowheads and Weka oh my! Great selection of bird tours. Just got back from an all-day tour of Ulva Island and lost count of the number of different bird species we saw. Also included information on the local and imported vegetation in the area.
Derek - Many thanks it was great to have you join our tour and glad you managed to see a variety of birds. Hope all is well for you in NZ.
