Fantastic experience: Just finished the Kea adventure tour and it was an amazing experience. Jack and Cody, the tourguides, were very kind and involved and did a great job at showing us around New Zealand. I did so many unforgettable things: ziplining, kayaking, the Tongariro Crossing, my first sky dive, swimming with dolphins, visiting the hobbiton movie set... This tour is a great way to explore New Zealand, without having to drive yourself, and to meet new people.

Great holiday with her, who recommended us the scenic photo stops and local foodies along the journey, and her swift re-routing during one road blockage was professional and impressive. Fantastic experience: Just competed a 9-day NZ South Island trip with Whaea-Nicole (driver-guide) under Stray Select Kaka Tour. The tour is packed with hiking opportunities to Hooker Valley, Mount John, which offer stunning views of Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo respectively. The stay at Hermitage Hotel is most memorable as it is so close to the mountains and the dinner and breakfast buffets are superb! Nicole also brought us to try the best pie in NZ at Farlie. Fantastic experience: I just landed back in my country after finishing kaka travel with stray. The lodgings are all wonderful and top grade. Our guide and driver Nicole is the best. There was a road block by a boulder between lake Matheson and queenstown. She didn't show a sign of frustration. She was determined to bring us to our destination in a good mood. A driving distance was supposed to be 3hrs turned to 10hrs. There are resting stops in between. For activities and foods, she provided alot of information. Their trips are good for hikers and adventurers who love activities without a leading trail guide during free and easy days. You can arrange your own trail which I love. Stray travel is simply the best. Will come back again.

Fantastic experience: We went on the 20 day Tui Adventure with my husband, brother, sister-in-law and cousin. We are all 60 plus. The rest of the group were 35 and under. The 1 driver/guide was great and kept us informed of our daily activities. The amount of activities and places to sightsee makes it a good value. My family had a good time and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to experience New Zealand.

There ws great variety in the accommodation, since a few destinations are off the beaten path where there’s no five star hotels. For us, that added a lot to the experience.

Negative experience: Travelling from Cromwell thru Lindis Pass on 3/1/23. Driver would not pull over to let people pass even though there were plenty of plsces to do so. Huge line ehind him. Inconsiderate driver and slow. PLR138

Fantastic experience: I used Stray back in the mid 2000’s. The buses didn’t even have logos at the time but it was the most fun I had traveling. Loved every minute of my trip. I remember the bus breaking down on the way up to Christchurch and everyone hoping a fence to drink and play football in a field. God I miss that time in my life and the people. The people, the drivers, and randomness were amazing. I’d do it again in heartbeat.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely incredible experience, everyone was so nice and I’ve made some awesome friends on the tour. The tour itself was just out of this world as well as the activities that we did. The highlights of this trip would have to be, overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound, skydiving over Abel Tasman, swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura, Queenstown and kayaking on Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! I can’t pick out one highlight of the trip as it was all so amazing. I was constantly wowed by everything we saw and did. 12/10 would recommend.

Fantastic experience: I had an amazing 9 days with Stray exploring the NZ South Island. Shorty was a great guide. The tour was really good to provide a taster of different parts of the country, it may have been better to stay a little longer in many places. I will probably look into the hop on/hop off bus next time, but the journey tour is great for a smaller holiday. Thoroughly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Together with a friend I went on a Blue Mountains day tour with Stray. The guide was really nice and told us some facts and funny things around the area. The group was lovely and I had a fun day of exploring the Blue Mountains :D

Fantastic experience: Wonderful experience with the 14 day Mackinnon tour with Stray. The driver, who was also the tour guide, was safe, competent, kind, and helpful. They really have it well organized and we saw many beautiful places that would be difficult to see on your own in such a short time. We got the upgraded private room accommodations and they were mostly good--some places were great and others acceptable. This is a good value tour for the money paid. In Queenstown, we spent 3 nights, which was great because it gave us time to relax in one place and choose what we wanted to do there. I pre-booked a plane ride to Milford Sound and also a jet boat and "funkyak" tour with other companies, which were great. People on the tour were younger than me (I'm 70), but we all got along very well. Interesting people with good attitudes. You can be social when you want, or take time for yourself if you prefer that. There is no toilet in the bus, but the driver is happy to stop as needed for toilet breaks, and many stops were provided along the way to use bathrooms and also to get some food. The food was okay. Some of the dinners that were provided were great. Breakfasts could be improved, as I prefer a healthy diet. Choices were often limited for breakfast. For dinner, vegetarian options were offered, though not much protein came with the veggie dinners. New Zealand in general is not very health conscious in my view, with lots of fried food and meat. Chefs do not appear to know how to make vegetarian and vegan meals that have balanced protein. For breakfast, natural yogurt (rather than the fruit varieties that have lots of sugar) and options to dairy milk for vegans, and better quality granola with less sugar would have been good, but overall the food was ok. I bought some food at grocery stores to supplement the meals offered, so I was ok. The driver/guide didn't talk endlessly, as some tour companies seem to think that people need constant entertainment, which I find annoying. I highly recommend this inspiring, amazing tour!

Negative experience: I didn’t even step on their bus but already very frustrated with my experience. They changed their itinerary, well, not exactly, but simply took out the major part of the itinerary I purchased due to severe weather and didn’t even bother to inform me about it. (I only found out when I emailed them) They didn’t bother also to offer any alternating route or destination . Why bother if they charge 20% fee for ANY cancellation) When I asked for a refund due to the change, they referred me to their cancellation policy page. The policy states that no matter what the reason is They will keep 20% of my payment. Customer service agent was very rude and unprofessional, kinda making fun of me for not reading all the fine print. Honestly, who does? I’m going to a developed and client oriented country I thought assuming I’ll be taking care of. Also when you purchase your pass, the page doesn’t take you to their bus schedule. There was no warning what so ever that their buses only depart twice (!!!!!?) a week during shoulder season? That’s what you find out on their app when you have already payed for your pass. Basically, you have a choice between sitting in the bus and follow their itinerary step by step and getting off and being stacked at one location for 4 days? Lol they call themselves a “flexible” way to travel. Very unexpected and unpleasant experience."

Fantastic experience: Was with Stray for my 24 day New Zealand summer cook adventure. Our driver was Husky and all I can say is he’s the most knowledgable, helpful, funny, likeable and overall great guy around. Always went the extra mile for every single person on the bus, and by the end we all felt like one big family. Had some of the best times of my life - have no doubt if you are considering booking this. Also has Seagul for the first 3 days, another great driver with a good sense of humour. 10/10!!!!!!!

The tour was amazing, it had more included in it than I was expecting, hardly spent any money, Just a few activities mainly in Rotorua. Fantastic experience: Stray was an optimal choice in picking a tour company for my limited time in the North Island in NZ. I'm a very heavy traveler at this point having had visited almost 100 different countries and usually, I'm pretty good about getting itineraries and building trips with my eyes closed. I had started to do that for my 8 days in NZ and kept on coming back to a thought. While I had the means to rent a car or use public and do this all on my own that Stray's price and what they included overall really wasn't that much of a price difference. At that point, it would be me just being stubborn in choosing to tour on my own and Stray's date for the North Island tour linked up perfectly with my fly in/out dates. The tour of the North Island was excellent - I can't say there were any parts that were less than optimal but I would just say when you visit the Blue Duck to make sure you are armed with the right supplies including alcohol. I'm somewhat of a foodie so while I can't say the food was at all bad, I like to turn things up on where I eat and was able to do so. There was a lot of space/time to allow me to freestyle and not feel obligated or forced to only do exactly what they want at their exact times. They kept things loose like that and as a freestyler of sorts, I liked that part about the journey with Stray. Shorty was an excellent guide providing a nice spirit throughout the journey. At no point did I feel that any part of the tour was less than professional but also, Shorty was nice and inclusive trying to make sure everyone had a good time.

I was debating whether to go with Stray or G Adventures but so glad I chose Stray - they seem to know all the cool random places that G don’t and places you would never think to go to if you were travelling around by yourself.

We even stayed at some hotels as well, and most breakfasts and dinners are included, with good variety and choice. Took us to some unique places. I wish it never ended.

Fantastic experience: First time that I went on a group journey, and thanks to Stray (especially our driver Lego and of course the other group members) I would definitely do it again! Was a lot of fun, with different options for different activities which made it easy for everyone to find something fun for them to do and enjoy.

Fantastic experience: I had the absolute best three weeks travelling the North Island with Stray on their Jonah Pass. I loved all of the unique and off the beaten path places we went to that I would never have found on my own. My driver guides Thor and Soxx were so fantastic, informative and fun, I just want to do it all over again! Highlights were White Water Rafting in Rotorua and the Tongariro Crossing!

Fantastic experience: 1. The route design is amazing. 2. All hotel locations are great, either in the city center or among the attractions. Additionally, some mountain cabins are very comfortable and unique. 3. Interacting with the driver and guide from New Zealand and fellow travelers from various countries during the trip can improve English skills and help understand foreign cultures. 4. It is not recommended for girls to share rooms, as there may be a situation where one girl shares a room with multiple male travelers. It is suggested that girls partner up for the tour. Applying for an upgrade to individual accommodation offers great value. 5. I felt that New Zealand is very safe during the trip. I did not encounter any deliberate provocation or theft.

Fantastic experience: I've just spent the most amazing three weeks travelling New Zealand with Stray Journeys. I've met the greatest group of people and our driver-guide Husky was fab and very knowledgabe about the various places we visited and very patient with us. I always felt well looked after and my many questions were answered. I had great fun and was pushed out of my comfort zone many times and loved every minute of it. Yeah, sweet as....Stray on!

Fantastic experience: I've been on a 9 days journey with Stray and I really really enjoyed it! I met the best people and we've experienced so many cool things together (we were 11, so it was really personal and we could always laugh and talk on the bus with everyone). I was so happy in this group and also the driver was friendly and funny - it almost felt like a roadtrip with friends. The accommodations were always clean and comfy and even though our driver Husky might have been a bit stressed sometimes, it didn't influence us and everything seemed very relaxed. Our acitivities were well organised and we didn't have to worry about anything. All in all I never expected this trip becoming so much fun and now I really miss it to travel in this group. I would definitely recommend you to travel with stray!

While it is a lot of driving, you get quite a few stops in different places around the country to stretch your legs and look at sights! All the activities and food are really great too, can’t wait for my tour in Asia in a couple months!

Everyone on the bus was so friendly- it was easily the kind of trip you could enjoy on your own because you are bound to meet people to do things with. I did the STEW pass and highly recommend it. Get on a Stray bus if you can!

It’s the will take you to places that none of the other buses go and organise experiences exclusive to you and your bus. Bus drivers are friendly and helpful and know how to have a good time! Positive experience: A bit overpriced for what's included, but definitely a great way to see a load of New Zealand

Fantastic experience: Stray is probably the easiest way to travel. I chose Stray for my trip through the South Island of New Zealand and it was amazing to just open your app, book the next bus and maybe even accomodation for the next places you'll visit. The best thing about them: their drivers!!! Absolutely nice, they know a lot of important but also weird stuff about the regions amd cities you're driving through and they are somehow always in a good mood! It's just nice to know you can rely on your transportation and can worry about other things while travelling!

Fantastic experience: If you take yourself some time every now and then its a wonderful alternative to buying your own car, with enthusiastic and very helpful drivers! Even though some points of interest are missing on their route (e.g. Dunedin or Hawke's Bay) you still get a magnificent ride through the country, highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: This is a FANTASTIC and very affordable way to see New Zealand. You are taken to all the best places and activities, your bus stops right outside each night's accommodation (a great boon when you have a heavy rucksack!), you are never short of great company and you will make lots of new friends. Never again would I consider hiring a car to explore a country where Stray is operating its tour buses!

Fantastic experience: Best way for someone travelling alone to see New Zealand... You gain an instant family! Be prepared to book your buses well in advance in summer though, hard to spontaneously hop off during peak season.

Fantastic experience: Definitely worth the price! I would rather go with Stray to have more “off the track” experiences and as well enjoy the journey to its fullest rather to go with other bus companies where there is a hard party every day which leaves you hungover the next day. You can make your own party on the Stray Bus whenever you or the group feels like it. I like as well that the age group and the nations of the people are more mixed which makes the journey even more unique. I can only recommend this bus company even though they have to get their app fixed but you can always call them for every issue and the team is always friendly and happy to help you out with booking your busses. Stick with stray, it will be worth it!

Fantastic experience: I would definitely recommend travelling in NZ with Stray. My boyfriend and I did the Jill and Jack pass in just under three weeks. We wished we had a little more time so we could have stayed longer in some places. Our driver Cookie was fantastic, as were the places we stayed, activities we did and the friends we made along the way! We only had the time to travel around the North Island and will definitely be using Stray in the future to travel the South Island!

Negative experience: I booked the bus beginning if December for end Jan to end February tour. I’m on a world trip right now and a friend from Germany visited me for around 3 weeks. So we thought because of the limited time we book a bus. No stress, nothing to plan, nothing to think about. I booked everything in an agency in Sydney, they also booked the whole itinerary in advance. Knowing and telling me that it might be crowded in February and therefore it’s better to book in advance. So we did. In January - after checking everything- I found out that most of my dates for stray bus New Zealand where booked for January instead of February (stray did the booking for me) - someone must have mixed up the month. I contacted the agency and they booked it in the right way. So I that was not the best way to start New Zealand with stray. > first I have to say: the app is horrible! The app is really not comfortable- because I have to book everything separate for me and my partner. If I book it for me and the bus is available that’s fine, but if I book it afterwards for him the bus might be full - there’s no chance to check that before?!? Only via calling stray you can check it before. And unfortunately because of “high season” 2 of 3 times it’s not possible to reach a person/operator on the phone. Please Call again later... the app is not intuitive at all, it takes ages to change things - everything is loading again and again. Very often it’s not possible to book anything, because all dates for all the next months are grey. So you call the operator and they tell you know Problem we book that for you. So what’s the app for?! > Bad customer service because of high season I was in contact several times with you. Via phone at least 10 times, additional via app/mail a few times (at least 4) but it always takes a couple of days until you get an answer which doesn’t make this my favorite medium to talk to you. Unfortunately I booked my tickets (for my friend and me) in December together with my stray ticket for Australia. Because the agency told me it’s an combined offer - special price - which is not. They also told me that everything is so flexible and you can hop on and if - best choice if you travel - so easy... unfortunately not at all. I had a lot of trouble with stray, the busses and trains in Australia, cancellations etc. I didn’t get my luggage (which I had stored at a shop in Sydney) for new year in Sydney because of that - spend 19 hours in bus & train in one day - really bad situation. Because the bus I and 3 other booked was already “gone” to Sydney the day before.... Nevertheless we went on the journey on the north island - and then tried to change something. From then everything went bad. No busses available. Or only waiting list. The person on the phone always told us it’s our risk. We can change the intinery but might be stuck. I heard from lots of travelers that they where stuck for a few days. For example when you get stuck on Monday in Wellington the next bus is on Thursday ;) then you stay there and pay for 3 extra nights. If you are lucky and find a hostel. If that happens to you in queenstown you are lost!! Almost no hostels in high season available. !!!! But We can’t get stuck. Because my partner has to fly back home for work. So it’s not an option. We have 4 days spare but if I get stuck for example in Wellington on Monday the next bus is Thursday! That’s 4 days. That’s not flexible at all. Same with the beach hopper. I tried to get on it, cause we payed for it! And I understand it’s busy right now - because of high season, but stray only operates on that “track” right for high season so they should have capacity in February to do that?! it’s the only season for beach hopper. Unfortunately not for us, because my partner is not going to go back to the north island. He has to fly out from Christchurch. And is not going to go back to the north.

Fantastic experience: Would recommend to travel with Stray any time. Very easy and comfortable, good variety of ages in the group of travellers and cool bus drivers. Enjoyed the trip a lot.

Fantastic experience: Well guys, where do I start? I'll make it as short as possible, otherwise you would still be reading my text tomorrow. I travelled with Stray for more then 2 month and finished with soo many new experiences and especially friends. Almost every passenger and driver were great people with lots of humor and an open mind. It'm both, happy and sad to go back home. But I would definetly recommend Stray to everyone, who wants to travel in New Zealand. Yes, the app isn't always working as it should (not often), but thats not worlds end. I had once that my booking was confirmed but didn't reach the hostel. I just had to pay the hostel again and get a refund from Stray, so that problem wasn't as big as it seems to be first. Apart from that, there isn't really a negative aspect, I can tell. All of the activitys I did were great, theres nothing I can find to improve. The hostels in the more remote places were all quite good, in the big citys I mostly booked the accomodation (YHA) myself. So if you want to meet people, see the country, have fun and just travel, then I can definetly recommend Stray to you!

Fantastic experience: I spent 3 and a bit weeks travelling with Stray all throughout the South Island in New Zealand and can honestly say I had one of the best experiences ever. Everyone I met on the buses were so friendly and I loved the flexibility of being able to hop on and hop off the bus at any point when I found a stop that I particularly liked. I thought there was a good mix of 'must do' stops like Queenstown, Mount Cook and Wanaka as well as some smaller stop offs were you could chill out a little more. I think it's perfect for anyone who is travelling solo and want to meet new people.

Fantastic experience: The best vacation of my life! A ton of impressions not only from New Zealand but also from interacting with people. Traveling on the bus with a large group of young people is a lot of fun. There is a chance to practice English. Awesome guide-drivers won't let you get bored. I would love to see Stray in Europe since my next vacation will most likely be spent there.

Fantastic experience: I really recommend Stray to solo travelers wanting to connect and meet with like minded people. Stray is super cost effective if you are alone as car rental and gas can become a huge expense fairly quickly. Stray is also helpful when it comes to finding Accomodation as they guarantee a room for you either 1-2 night accommodation. It’s really helpful during busy season and is the main reason I chose stray. You also learn a lot of culture, history, and they help you choose activities that will interest you.

Positive experience: Great way to travel New-Zealand! Would reccoment stray. If you want to do activities, better ask driver where And Which ones to do. Do NOT do the star gazing thing in Mt Cook that is a Total rip off And So not worth the money!!

Fantastic experience: I went on the Dingle tour and it was fantastic. Great activities, accommodation and guide throughout the tour. A diverse group when it came to nationalities and age groups. Got on very well with the group. Completely removed all the stress of planning a tour of New Zealand had I tried to do it myself.

Fantastic experience: Outstanding experience! Took the cook tour which includes north and south island. Was perfect to get a first impression of this breathtaking, wide-ranging country. Tourguides are competent and superfun. Contact with office was always helping and friendly (had questions before the tour started) To sum up: I can highly recommend Stray Travel.

Fantastic experience: Best way to travel New Zealand! Great drivers, amazing people, unbelievable stops during the trip. Sadly not as flexible as I wish to. Have to book your busses far in advance otherwise they are fully booked out and you are the 5th or so on the standby list. But most of the time some people decide to change their dates and you get a spot on the bus. Very helpful if you call and explain which dates you have to travel. The App is amazing. Negative experience: 'Off the beaten track' - nope! Super touristic and very restrictive, with little freedom to travel to teh places you want to in New Zealand. Do not recommend.
