Negative experience: Stay away from this car rental company. 250000 km on the clock, doors would not close properly. No after hours shuttle to Christchurch airport. Overall a rip-off. Insurance charged was worth more than the car itself. Never coming back
Negative experience: Rented a car last fall. Really bad costumers service. When i tried to return the car the office was closed. Try to call the number many times and no answer. They asked me to drop the car at a random spot. Almost miss my flight. Worth to pay a little more somewhere else and get a good service.
Fantastic experience: We booked a Kuga 2/3 bed campervan indirectly through RatPack Travel so can't comment much on the booking process, but pick up was easy and the guy was friendly and helpful. The van was nice, clean and perfect for what we needed to get us around Northland for 9 days. The were 3 of us for part of the trip, there was enough storage space and beds are easily put out and away again. Having the porta potty allowed us to freedom camp when we wanted. The 12v chargers can be used without a powered site and the van stores water for the tap. The best views are found freedom camping. Things we liked that stood out to us included that the van has cooking stoves (rather than fixed in the kitchen area) so you can cook outside the van. The duvets made it extra comfy and warm, the van had a reverse parking camera which was helpful, and we didn't have to pay extra for any of the equipment like outside table and chairs. We thought it could do with curtains behind the sink area and into the driver cabin for privacy at night, but the suction window blinds elsewhere were good and insulated. After drop off, we appreciated the lift to the airport (which is about a 5/10 min drive away). Make sure to bring an aux cable, phone holder for sat nav and towels. Overall, a good experience and we would recommend Scotties.

Negative experience: We had a confirmed booking made over three months in advance with Scotties Queenstown via Carwiz. The night before we flew out to New Zealand I got an email saying to call them, with no other details. When I called them they said they had "no cars" and couldn't tell me earlier because they "couldn't find my email address". The best they could do was offer to rent me an SUV at more than double the price of my original booking. So I was stuck with no car and no chance to book another one somewhere else at such short notice as everything in Queenstown was booked out. (A cynic might say they had realised this too, and cancelled my advance booking in order to rent my car to someone prepared to pay more money at short notice.) I would not recommend this outfit.
Sorry for your problems. We had a staff member become very ill and had to close the Queenstown office. The elderly gentleman who helped you was hanging a busy city office including phones, customer service and car cleaning. We may have been better to cancel your booking but were mindful Queenstown was booked out of cars.
Negative experience: Never before have I been so traumatised dealing with a staff member from Scotties. I spoke to Brian (british accent) on the phone to arrange a pick up when I arrived in Queenstown airport. He was very rude and condescending. He said I haven't filled out "check-in" form that they've apparently emailed me. I explained that I never got the email but he kept talking over me & argued that they've sent it. I gave my email address again and he says my email was too difficult to write. How is this my problem? All my contact info was provided in the original booking, maybe he should have checked it. After waiting for >45 mins Christian came & picked us up to their office. He was nice and apologetic, but Brian doesn't work at the same office. In my experience, the rental company picks up the customer and go to their office and do the paper work. I understand they're short staffed, but the rudeness from Brian is unforgivable. No one should ever experience the rudeness and incompetency from Brian who hasn't a clue of what customer service is. It's not the impression you'd want of NZ. Avoid this company, if you want a pleasant experience.
Negative experience: Here is a list of problems I had/still have: - I was over charged by $22.78 and now Scotties will not respond to any of my emails. - It took an hour to be picked up from the airport which I then had to leave my partner and two kids at the airport for another hour because they only had enough room for one person to be picked up. I then went and picked up my partner and two very patient kids... - I specifically wanted and ordered a 4WD. However, I was given an AWD. (This needs to be more transparent) AWD and 4WD are not the same. Do not advertise 4WD if it isn't... (This was one of the main reasons I ordered a rental from Scotties) - The car seats were gross. We had to clean raisins out of them. They obviously had not been washed as they smelt bad. - Ski rack was old and the key chambers were very difficult to use. Trying to get snowboards on and off the roof racks for half an hour is not fun. - The windscreen was chipped
Fantastic experience: The owner has been fantastic and went above and beyond in service. The vehicle was good. Only thing I didn't like was not getting the vehicle with a full tank as its hard to gauge exactly how much to put back in before returning it. Otherwise 100,% excellent service!! If you are going skiing or over the pass between Wanaka and Queenstown be sure to get chains.

Fantastic experience: We had a great experience with Scotties Rentals. We had a Toyota Voxy at a last minute booking and it was perfect for getting up and down to the Snow. Like everyone in Queenstown these guys are run off their feet due to a shortage in labour but they continue to help everyone out with a smile and a bit of humour along the way. Highly recommend getting a 4wd vehicle for any Snow adventures to safe the need to put chains on most days. Thanks to the Scott’s and Christian for getting us to the airport.

Fantastic experience: We had four different car rental companies in our Queenstown visits in the past few years. Scotties is definitely the best car rental experience we had. Clean and good car condition, nice and friendly staff (Amy), easy and flexible pick up and drop off, and great rental deals. We will go with Scotties in our future Queenstown visits for sure.
Fantastic experience: Exceptional service from this car rental agency.. pick up and drop off was effortless. Car had the odd ding but was absolutely perfect for me… and easily the best price in QT over Easter. Christian from Argentina was brilliant - upbeat and helpful, prompt and courteous. Fantastic experience: We hired a car with Scotties for two weeks on our trip to Queenstown and couldn't have been happier. Decided to go with one of the smaller companies over the big players and were very happy with our decision. Great value for money, lovely staff and customer service. Negative experience: Received a car that was not at all similar. We ordered an SUV off Economy Bookings. We received a mini van that had god knows what stained into the seats. There was 220k on the clock and the CV joint was clearly buggered When I called to exchange it for the car I ordered, I was told they didn't have one. I demanded a refund, they said sure. 4 days of phone calls later they tell me nope, no refund, have to go to Economy Bookings. Scammers
Thanks for your review and we are sorry there was confusion over the car you booked. From our side the car was clearly represented on the third Party site and no where does it say it was a SUV. We had our independent mechanics check the CVs and they were fine.The staff drove the car home for a few days also to check it out. We could not give you a refund immediately as you did not pay us directly but are working with excellent third parties to sort this out for you.

Negative experience: If I could give zero stars I would. Arrived to Queenstown and told to call when we arrived to arrange pick up, there was no answer after ringing over ten times. Checked booking email and used address which was provided which turned out to be the wrong address entirely. After finally finding the address online we arrived to the pick up point. They had no knowledge of my booking even though I had already paid the rental fee in full. After making multiple phone calls to people who were as clueless as herself the receptionist finally located our booking (which was also wrong). They then told us they didn't have the vehicle we had booked and replaced it with a smaller vehicle which wasn't ideal. All in all it was a very unprofessional experience and would never recommend for anyone to use this joke of a company.

Fantastic experience: I have just finishing travelling around the north and south islands of New Zealand. In that journey I rented 3 cars from Scotties in Auckland (once) and Queenstown (twice). I travelled over 4000 km in their 3 cars. In one word, they were EXCELLENT. In my view the negative views that are posted here reflect the writers and not Scotties. I found all of their staff of the highest quality. They were courteous, went out of their way to help me, drove me to the respective airports promptly, did not haggle in any way over payment. They did not pressure me in any way over insurance (I have my own on my credit card). Their cars performed to my satisfaction. So, if you want to rent a reasonable car at a reasonable price and great good service then rent from Scotties. Thank you Scotties, you made my trip in New Zealand so pleasurable.

Negative experience: We were greeted with very rude and slow service. We inspected the vehicle before hire and found panels missing, cobb webbs inside the vehicle around the windows, and a generally old dirty van vibe. When we pointed out the sad state of the van we were told to head back to the Airport if we weren't satisfied.

Negative experience: They delivered a malfunctioning car. When I went in to tell them about it they refused to give me a different car, and made me wait while they took the car to a company that could repair it. This cost me a day of my vacation as I had to travel back to Queenstown. Poor management, and worse customer service. A rental car company needs to provide working cars, no excuses.

Negative experience: Appalling service. When we arrived in Queenstown, we were told that a staff member would be at the airport to collect us within 10 minutes - we waited half an hour. The car we were given came with half a tank of fuel and most of the tyres were flat (around 20PSI - the vehicle was pulling to the left) unfit for road use in my opinion. When we brought the car back to the yard after our trip, we stood around waiting for 40 minutes to be served. There were multiple people waiting around and everyone getting very concerned that we wouldn't make our flights out of Queenstown around 10.25am. We were told that we should have arrived at the yard earlier (the yard opened at 9am and majority of us had been there since 9am). We eventually ended up calling Green Cabs who took us all to the airport although, this came at an expense of $35.30. Scotties failed to follow through with their service and should be responsible for the cab fare.

Firstly you need to call us for pick up when you arrive and then we do have a drop off location at the airport, if you are running short of time we would normally direct you there. I am perplexed as to how this all happened as that would be what we suggested if we were very busy. Our staff check the tyres every time the cars go out so a little unsure how all 4 tyres were below the recommended pressure

Positive experience: We booked ‘a car similar to Madza 3’ but got an old Nissan one that couldn’t accelerate uphill, the car was very old and have a very small fuel tank so we had to fill up every 2 days or so. When receiving car we got charged extra for second driver that we already signed up and possibly paid for. Staff was nice as I forgot my jacket in the car on the way to the airport and the guy went back to where he dropped me off and gave it back to me! Though not sure if I would use this company again :(

Negative experience: The car is relatively old, which is not like the picture shown in the website. Due to the very old model, the car doesn't have an auto break. I would not recommended inexperienced driver to rent this car especially driving on this sloppy land. The interior of the car was stained with old car smell. Wiper is pretty wear off, always wiped with squeaky sound in the rain. The automatic doors don't work properly, it kept closing itself. The door would only works when the automatic door function was off. The vehicle was also rented with one bar of petrol, it was hard to refill to one bar when returning the car. The service of the company is good, but considering the vehicle itself I would definitely not coming back again

Fantastic experience: ONE OF THE BEST competitive, no fuss, car rentals in Queenstown. Super friendly staff, very accommodating allowing me to bring my booking forward a day and extend it by two days without a problem ! Fantastic experience: GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND VERY HELPFUL!! Overall our experience was fantastic, when we first arrived at Christchurch everyone was so helpful and friendly. Especially the English girl (sorry forgot names) she mentioned she was new to go the job and she was great! Really helpful,explained everything and made sure we were okay. The van itself was fantastic, the steering, the outside design was sleek and looked great against all the fab views! We got many compliments on our journey about the van! We stood out in a good way! ... possibly because it wasn’t a certain bright green and purple other company rent van.. anyway! Along the way we had an issue with the speaker and the entertainment system broke. But the guys at their Queenstown location were so helpful and told us to come in straight away. James from the Queenstown was sooooo helpful, he gave us extra lights for the van and made sure everything was upto scratch. It was really reassuring and we felt very looked after! He was great and let me rinse the free WiFi they have provide . Being a typical British idiot I hit a boulder in my blind spot and we were slightly unsure what to do, James gave us his number if we ever had any other issues and he helped us out with the process. Throughout our whole journey we felt safe and looked after definitely, I would highly recommend these guys! Couldn’t fault them will be using them again!

Negative experience: I wish there was a no star option. When we phoned them from the airport (our plane had been delayed) and they said they had closed and we could get our car in the morning. Fat lot of good that was when we were stranded at the airport. Unhelpful and unfriendly.
Normally this would not have been a problem but we had 2 key staff away that day and we could not contact anyone for after hours. Next time you book last minute and then the flight is delayed 2 hours it is best just to give us a call and let us know and we will always arrange something for you. We hope you managed to have a great holiday.

Negative experience: I really wish I had not gone for a cheap car rental and paid extra money for everything you can imagine. It’s a total SCAM!! Please please do not book. We arrived in Queenstown in the evening the car was booked and everything was paid for. When we got there were no message from them, nobody there, no direction for where to go for pickup as their office was closed! On calling the no. Provided on one of their e-mails and asking for directions, we were told to “go to hell and book somewhere else, I am cancelling your booking” just because I told them if I do not receive the e-mail I will call them back (as my phone was on roaming and I had no clue if I can even access internet). The illiterate owner did not even consider us being stranded in cold in an unknown city with a 12 months old child. He even denied that we have paid them money for the car rental which was outright lying. A few minutes later, as we do not have any other option at this stage other than just being humiliated by this person, my husband called again and was able to get the directions to the car park where they parked their car. And when we saw the car it was a hatchback! While we were definitely told that we are getting a sedan however, it wasn’t the only problem, the car was in a very bad condition, the bumper of the car broken, very loud and it smelt like urine. Please do not book here I am shocked that they even have a 2 star rating.

Fantastic experience: My mom rented a car through cheap o air which used Scottie’s in Queenstown. Due to delayed flight we had to use after hours service. I spoke on the phone to 2 different workers in Auckland, both were helpful and pleasant. I couldn’t get the form to submit so a worker had me text it to her in screenshots. Picking up and dropping off car was easy and conveniently located about 5-10 minute walk from airport. The car gave us no trouble though it was in Chinese or Japanese. I left my makeup bag in the car and the same helpful worker had it mailed to her personally in Auckland where I could retrieve it. The car rental was cheap and the customer service was personable and outstanding!

Fantastic experience: Made booking over telephone in less than 5minutes, admin process in the office very efficient. We required the car quickly as running late- staff appreciated this and hurried the car round to the front after safety checks completed. Reasonable price for last minute (on the day) booking- NZ$211 for 48 hours rental Tiida Latio including full insurance and excess waiver. Car clean and comfortable, all features working- AC etc. Served us well for our trip to Milford Sound. Free shuttle service from and to Queenstown airport when using the Frankton branch. Thank you Scotties! See you again when we come back to Queenstown.

Positive experience: The staff were super friendly and came across as travelers themselves. It is cheaper than other options. However, only if you allow them to block 2,000$ on your credit card. If you take the limited liability option like I did then you can avoid the card block, but then you pay as much as you would for a normal/better car service. The car was very old, al in chinese and the music system didnt work, but it did its job. And I chose the cheapest option available so cant complain really.

Negative experience: We booked through Expedia what we thought was a new corolla or similar. What we got was a terrible 13 year old Nissan Tiilda. It was a stained interior with padding missing from the center arm rest, and not all the seatbelts worked. They should change their company name from NU to OLD. Very much not as advertised . If they would be up front and honest about what your are getting then that would be fine . When I raised it with the last at the desk she did not seem to care and just said that this is common practice here in this area. So don't rent from NU which is affiliated with Economy through Expedia . Unless you want to drive an old stained and unsafe car .

Positive experience: 4 stars only because I booked under NU car rental on Expedia and then found out it also operates under the banner Scotties. Also couldnt find them at queenstown airport. Had to call from overseas number. Everything after that was a smooth sail.

Some people prefer to spend substantially less and go with a local company. Almost all local companies are not located in the terminal and like many of the others, we run a shuttle service between our office (5 mins drive away) and the airport. All the best, Scotties Team

Negative experience: Hands down the worst rental experience I've had. The employee was nice, but the car was garbage. It was a old Nissan Teana imported from Japan. The car was covered with scratches and dents, smelled bad, had 127,000km, no cruise control, breaks pulsated and power steering was failing. It nearly couldn't climb a small hill in town, and the radio was all Japanese, we never figured out how to use the climate control, and the FM radio was set to Japan frequencies, so we had to ride in silence on our 6hr drive to mount cook. The car only had 3/8 tank of fuel in it(even thought the rental agreement said it would be full). This was super inconvenient having to take the car directly to the gas station after renting. Also annoying because at the end of the trip we had to keep the fuel near empty to avoid paying for fuel we wouldn't use. Scotties was a few minute shuttle from the airport and made us nervous if anyone would even be around when we returned. I would highly recommend everyone avoid this company.
Positive experience: The office is a bit of a drive away from the airport but we were picked up relatively quickly after landing. The car wasn't amazing but great value!

Negative experience: If i could give this mob less than one star I would, as with many other customer webslso booked through Expedia. I was quoted $196 aud for C class car with GPS, ski racks, snow chains and booster seat. When I arrived I was told the car didn’t have my requested accessories because it didn’t show up on there end, even though I had the booking reference on hand which clearly stated what I had ordered and what the price would be.. I was then told I would be given a temporay vehicle to use whilst they rectified the error and organised the correct vehicle, then charged an additional $350 to add these extras. They then advised me they would meet me at my hotel with the new vehicle at a specified time. This did not happen, an hour past the specified time I was force to call their office to be told that he had left 20 mins ago and would be there in 5 mins.. Another 20 mins later I had to call back to find out what going on only to be told by someone else that the representative hadn’t left and vehicle wasn’t ready. I was forced to drive back to Scottie’s in Queenstown where we waited another half hour for vehicle to finally turn up but only a quarter tank of fuel.. Then this morning when I went to drop the car back at 9am as specified on the booking we find they are shut and knowones home, was forced to leave the keys with adjacent hotel as we needed to get to the airport. Will never use Scottie’s again, management really need to re-evaluate there staff that run the Queenstown office..
Negative experience: We booked a car through Expedia before travelling to New Zealand. We purchased travel insurance with car excess prior so we wouldn’t have to add it when we hired the car. When we went to pick up the car, they told us it didn’t matter if we already had insurance, even though I had the certificate with us, they wanted to hold $3500 on our credit card. Well, that was a big chunk of our spending money so we had no choice but to purchase more insurance through them. Our car was filthy on the outside, had cuts and stains on the interior seats. We could smell something burning when we would drive uphill which was concerning. While we were in Queenstown, we received a warning ticket stating our car was unregistered! Had to call Scotty’s in Christchurch to find out what the go was, was told to go the the Queenstown branch, when we went there they had no idea what was happening. Told us we could go and get a print out of the registration or they could drop it to us. Very poorly run, would NEVER rent through them again!
Fantastic experience: Really pleasantly surprised by how warm and friendly they were. Car (pictured below) was good, clean and good sized, lacking a turbo though ;)

Negative experience: Hired their furniture truck here in Queenstown, took a picture of odometer and petrol gauge, did 36KM with the truck and returned it within 2 hours or so, due to an error put $72.86 of petrol instead of $7-$8 which is what it would have consumed with only 36km, I had taken pic of the odometer and petrol gauge after returning the truck, the local staff told me to write to their head office requesting a refund, I also talked with their head office and they asked me to email them the details, which I did attaching the pics of the petrol receipt, before and after odometer reading, explaining the genuine error in overfilling the tank by a long shot, after a day or two receive an email that they dont give refund in this case, their logic was that since this was my error and nothing to do with them, they dont give refund. Well basically in every overpayment case it is the payers error, however decent companies do give your money back. Looking at their reviews majority of which currently are 1star, I am not even surprised now. Will not hire from these guys ever again.

Negative experience: Bad condition, old cars Stay away!
Negative experience: Very unprofessional. They leave the store unattended for large amounts of time. I reserved through expedia and bought expedias insurance. Scotties required me to buy their own nsurance or they would put a $3,000 hold on my car (which i didn't have) so i had to pay another $200 for insurance i already bought. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! 0 stars.
Negative experience: I booked with Scotties from America, so it was the company NU. While the price was right the car and service were not. I was picking up my car after arriving in the Queenstown airport. I had to call and then wait 20 minutes for a van to arrive. The van then drove about 10 minutes to the rental location. Once there, it took almost 40 minutes to get through the check in process. I got a navigation system and was charged $10 per day for it. The system didn't work. If it was raining, or cloudy it was "unable to find service". It also was unable to find popular points of interest and addresses. The car was old and had over 100,000 miles on it with damage all around the car. I would not rent from them if you are looking for a rental car.
Negative experience: Terrible customer service, the lady at the front desk was not friendly. Hidden and expensive insurances that cost us more than the rental. Car arrived with under a quarter of a tank of gas. Based on other reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, Yelp, Facebook and Rankers it seems like our experience was similar to others. Sounds like if you dont pay for insurance you will be hit with fake speeding tickets and damage charges.
Negative experience: They charge in USD which does not make sense, booked on expedia was going to be charged 86 AUD without insurance and all mandatory fees included. I choose 2 days insurance @ 18 USD per day and ended up paying AUD 150? Asked scotties to explain the cost breakdown but was of no help. Had to leave with the car as booked attractions. Will never ever use scotties in my life ever again. I would have given 1/2 star
Negative experience: DO NOT USE THIS CAR RENTAL COMPANY! - Worst customer service I have ever received - The owner is the least professional person I have ever dealt with - Do not make the mistake of giving Scotties your money I hope for their sake they improve after getting such bad feedback

Negative experience: This rental company will charge 100% or more for cancellations. Just beware- better to deal with other companies who don't charge for late cancellation due to poor weather/change of plans.

Negative experience: While coming from the different country, didn't know about them. Mainly thought them as a "available in NZ only car rental".They show latest cars on the website and ~$10 less price than the competitors. And, then give you 2008 model 150,000km car imported from Japan. Couldn't even play my ipod. I'm happy at least car didn't brake down. You better rent from other better known rentals.

We have later model vehicles available however the reservation that was sent to us from NU Global Rental Car Network stated you had booked a Compact Car: Nissan Tiida or similar. Negative experience: Worse customer service I won't even give 0. They should be on negativewe arranged a rental car through Expedia and they mentioned it will be new car 2014-2016 however when we went there, we were given old car 2005 with no alarm and just one key. Next day the car key didn't work and the staff came and picked that car and guess what ? He gave us the old car with marks dents wasn't worth 400 and they didn't compensate any money which we paid for the car.because we didn't have choice, we had to take it and use and when we returned the old car, Maya the staff said we can't refund you and we have to go through owner who is in Auckland. Another staff Christine mentioned that their car conditions are all like that with dents accident marks. Maya sold us insurance on the previous car and later on when the car was swapped worth (400) she didn't mention that she will give us refund for using old car People out there please be careful . You will just spoil your holiday The rental company is called scooties rental and they deal with Nu cars There's other rental cars inside the airport which u can get through them We were just very new to Queenstown Check the review after 1.7 WORSE SERVICE ENTIRE NZ
Sorry you were not happy. We do not advertise brand cars and all are mechanically sound. No where do Expedia say it is a new car. I am sorry you had a problem with the key. Please contact [email protected] for help with this. We don't charge people for swapping and the insurance you bought would have gone with the new car also. I think this is totally a misunderstanding.

Negative experience: Poor poor poor service , My husband and I arrived at the airport 1 hour later then planned as the pilot couldn't land due to the wind conditions : Once we landed we called the company and advised we just landed and our flight was late . They said to pick up the car the following day . We took a taxi to the Hilton hotel from the airport and the next morning went straight to the car rental office near the hotel . The lady was very unprofessional was on her phone the whole time my husband and I where there explaining that the flight was late cause we could t land due to the wind conditions and her reply was well you should have let us no ( was I mean to use the pilots phone to call and say sorr we can't land ) we advised her that the representative that took our call advised we could still pick up the car the next morning cause it was available and her reply was no sorry we gave the cars away - Will never use this company , thank god we ended up hiring the car through budget so friendly and we're much more helpful .
We would never not keep a car for someone who was a little late. The industry standard is 2 hours however we keep cars for longer than this and usually leave something at the after hours location.
Positive experience: Staff are friendly and office is clean. Location is a bit far from central Queenstown. Seemed to be a little short staffed when we were there as we waited for quite some time to be picked up from the airport and to get our car. Car was bigger than expected and made for a comfortable drive.
