Issues with cleanliness, particularly in shared bathrooms and kitchens, have been mentioned frequently. Guests should be prepared for basic accommodations and consider the mixed reviews to ensure their expectations align with the experience offered.
Nomads Capital Hostel Wellington: Reviews
Positive experience: We arrived at check in and paid upon arrival, the room we were given was horrible and small. The bed was like something you buy from an op shop 20 years ago and there's not even a table or chairs. We complained asap and got upgraded for free but no refund was possible and that's what we wanted! We went to get our bags to swap rooms and the key card for the floor wasn't working. Lucky the long way around was still possible. The second room was pretty much the same, slightly longer with a double and single bed - still no table or chairs. They were nicer than a slab of concrete. The power plug is faulty for the tv, the sink is blocked and the toilet seat doesn't stay upward (for male #1s), but the service staff are quick to sort things out so that's a really big positive. At least it's close to the main part of town and was pretty quiet after 11 on the Friday night. It is a place to rest your head.
Negative experience: Technically a nice Hostel but with a BIG problem. The kitchens backdoor leads to a backyard and is always open. The pigeons like that und are regular guests in the kitchen and walk and pick everywhere in the kitchen from dishes to tables and so on. Talked with the staff two times about it but they don´t really care. So technically a good hostel apart from the high health risk in the kitchen.
Negative experience: The worst hostel I’ve ever been! The guy at the reception with long blond hair is very disrespectful and doesn’t have the skills to deal with people. The place is dirty, flies and cockroaches everywhere. Stay away from this place!
Fantastic experience: It was actually really nice! Comfy, clean, nice and efficient personnel. It's cheap so don't expect a 5 star hotel but it's perfect for backpackers.
Positive experience: I'm bike packing and camping, so after a few days in the road a hostel is a delight to have a shower and a real bed. The bed was comfy but the shower in the private double room had a clogged drain so the water rose up a lot and almost went over the edge. Service was great- a French girl at the reception was helpful and very friendly. I asked for more milkettes for my coffees and twice she came to deliver. The kitchen had options of a gas stove or an electric stove! I've never seen a hostel have options (gas for sure is elite but variety is appreciated). 10/10 with the cleanliness. Also the bar gives you 20% off your first drink, and it's in a great part of town. Quick walk to everything it seems
Fantastic experience: Despite seeing a lot of negative reviews, I found this place to be amazing for the price. We had a private room It’s basic but tidy. The ensuite was clean, and the staff were fantastic. When we arrived, the shower wasn’t draining, but the staff quickly swapped our room, and from there, everything went smoothly. If you’re like us and prefer to spend money on experiences, with the room just being a place to rest your head at night, this place is perfect. It’s basic but has everything you need, all within walking distance at a great price. No complaints!
Positive experience: Private room was comfortable and reasonably clean for the price. Even has a tv & heater- Def will book again
Fantastic experience: Great Vibe , Nice Bar , Good Food Great Drinks ! Pool Table . I miss it Soo much can't wait to come back !
Negative experience: If it was your last option to stay then I would say it’s pretty alright. We didn’t get the room we booked for, plus there was dried blood on the sheets! A bit of a health and safety risk. We booked for two double beds and were given a double and a single which isn’t what we were expecting. Also bring extra towels with you, might be drying yourself with your clothes.
Negative experience: Fix cracked windows. Can hear screaming drunk people all night. Better still, get them double glazed.
Fantastic experience: It is a big place , the beds are comfy and the staff is kind I recomend, the best is the ubication is only 4 minutes walking from te papá museum
Negative experience: There was a bad smell in my room, almost like the windows had never been opened. Reception staff were very nice and helpful and kindly upgraded me from a 10 bed room to a 4 bed room for free. Location is good, but I've never stayed somewhere where the room smelt that bad
Negative experience: First of all, as soon as I and my fellow companions walked into this hostel, the stench was unbearable. The walls were sticky; it was humid, and that's not even the worst of it. The receptionist took a cigarette break every 10 minutes. After finally getting into the room, we found white powder, beer bottles, and some kind of pills? The heating in the rooms was terrible; it was either warm or freezing cold. Either way, nothing was comfortable. After needing a long-awaited toilet break, all of the bathrooms on our floor were out of service so we had to go a floor up. When we were in the shower, the curtains were basically see-through. Last, and absolutely the worst, was the kitchen. The fridges were moldy, with rotting food inside, and the kitchen was cluttered and nothing worked. I would not want to come back here if it's the last place on earth.
Negative experience: Awful 'hostel', the whole place smells disgusting and is extremely dirty, it's more like a homeless shelter. The windows are single glazed and the heating doesn't work so if you go in winter you'll freeze. We had to sleep with our coats, hat and scarf on and were still cold. You might aswell be sleeping on the street outside, at least it's cleaner there.
Negative experience: We came to check in to Nomads around 9pm yesterday. The lady who greeted us was nice at first but then asked for ID - my partner and I handed over his drivers license and my 18+ card. She then told us we could not stay without my passport or license. I do not have license which I explained, and had left my passport in Christchurch as I did not need it for a one day domestic trip. My 18+ card is a recognised and accepted form of New Zealand photo identification that has been accepted literally everywhere else in NZ I have ever been since I got it 5 years ago. It had not expired, but we were told that our options were to materialise a passport, or leave the premises with nowhere to stay and no refund offered. We had no prior warning that we needed ID at all, and definitely not a passport. Apparently it was for security, but I cannot see how this would provide any additional security to this place, especially considering the standard of the rooms provided. We luckily had a friend with a key to our house back in Christchurch who drove to our place and sent through a photo, but I wish we had just stayed somewhere else anyway as it sounded like there was a waterfall outside, the sound of which was drowned out only by the construction that happened throughout the night. For the price you pay (nearly $90 for one night), just go somewhere else. The staff offered no help, solutions, or assistance and when we finally got to the room your could clearly hear people talking and walking outside, and the elevator. I had stayed here previously but will NEVER stay again. The location isn't even much better than most other places in Wellington.
Fantastic experience: Staff are amazing! Got my own room and bathroom so all goods. Accessible to shops, restos and the waterfront. You could store your luggage if you come in a little early before check-in time. :)
Fantastic experience: We have stayed at nomads a couple of times and it's great! All the staff are lovely and welcoming. Lots of activities going on throughout the week to.
Positive experience: We had a great experience! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was also very convenient. Lots of people left their dirty dishes all around the kitchen, which is not the Hostel's fault though.
Fantastic experience: Great location and very helpful staff. When I ran into an issue with my shared dorm room they went out of their way to rectify it for me straight away. Recommend if you’re travelling through Wellington!
Fantastic experience: The staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival. James the receptionist made us feel at home and talked us through things to do and see in the area. We stayed in a private room and it is perfect for couples with a clean bathroom and comfy bed.
Positive experience: I think the hostel itself is okay. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are also quite clean and large. I would be very happy to have a piano and other instruments. Price performance is definitely quite good in this case. However, there are some things that really bother me and others. The kitchen is an absolute disaster and I know that this is due to the visitors who do not leave the kitchen tidy after they have used it and I know this because I see that the kitchen is cleaned regularly every day. This could be easily improved by putting up signs pointing out the camera and imposing a $50 fine for people who don't put their stuff away properly. This is how it is displayed in every other hostel and it works there. Another thing that bothers us is the music in the lobby where the most comfortable seating is. The music is often too loud so that you can't even watch a series (despite noise canceling) or talk to others. I hope that these things can be changed. Nevertheless, it is a good hostel that is really cheap and I can definitely recommend it.
Negative experience: Oh god I wish I had read the reviews. This place was straight up the worst hostel I've ever stayed in. When you see reviews that say it felt like a homeless shelter, it literally did. We had a man check into our room at 11pm, high on drugs, wake us all up, and the proceeded to be sick all over the toilet and basically destroy it. Also, half the stuff is just broken?? Most of the hobs in the kitchen don't work, the hot water dispenser is broken, and every other toilet and shower is out of order. Just. Avoid this place. Unless someone puts in some serious TLC to make it good. Oh! And only one of the front desk staff were actually pleasant.
Negative experience: I am absolutely disgusted and very disappointed with the service from this accommodation. My fellow traveler doesn’t have access to a passport or license, so he had a government approved Kiwi Access Identification Card. After a long drive from Auckland and arriving at midnight (we made sure this was okay) we were denied accommodation by the receptionist called Walker, leaving us on the streets for the night. This would mean that anyone who can’t afford to travel (overseas) and also doesn’t have the accessibility to get their license can’t stay at your accommodation. It’s almost discriminating. Don’t waste your money at this hotel, we ended up going to the Cambridge Hotel and they provided outstanding, last minute accommodation which almost costed the same but had a kitchen and TV. It was not listed anywhere on the website stating that they don’t accept NZ ID Cards (literally everywhere else does). I also wouldn’t have mentioned the receptionists name if he hadn’t treated us with the most debilitating ignorant attitude. The place looked run down, was super busy for a Sunday at midnight and just not accomodating at all. I’m very disappointed and so are my friends.
Positive experience: They are proud owners of the squeaky bed frames from 1987. The staff was largely indifferent. I don't know. Just another hostel. Come here if you have to, I guess.
Positive experience: I had a private room and was super happy. Bathroom was in suite and I was more than happy after reading other reviews. Maybe a single room experience is worth the extra cash
Negative experience: Actually so beat. Rented a room on the third floor and walk in to the worst stench imaginable. It could only be described as a mens locker room, if they never washed themselves or their jockstraps. The beds were itchy and most definitely not washed. Dont even bother to use the kitchen or the fridge either. The bathroom reeked of mold as well. But the room smell was so terrible, it was as if they stuffed the room full of dirty gym socks and then came on them. We opened the window and tried to move the fan to the window but the fan proceeded to fall apart as we lifted it up and the smell lingered. Actually the beatest place to spend a night. Id genuinely recommend checking out the nearby homeless encampment before venturing near this rats nest. Mind you its 2 am inside the hostel as I write this. I feel bugs crawling on me and I have turned nose blind to the mens locker room. If you come to wellington AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Positive experience: Good location, friendly and helpful staff, but that's about the only positive thing. The kitchen is super small and badly equipped compared to the many guest being hosted. The bathrooms are dirty, rooms are dark, smelly and hot. The WiFi gets constantly disconnected from your device. Also multiple guest were on drugs and harassing other guests (constant knocking on door, taking off their clothes in communal spaces, hitting furniture...). Definitely stayed at better hostels during my time in NZ.
Positive experience: A nice hostel in a good central location in Wellington. The rooms are quite ok to stay in. Nothing special, just your average hostel rooms and bunkbeds. The facilities are also good, the only issue is the size of the kitchen and common areas. They are way to small for the amount of rooms and people the hostel facilitates. It is quite hard to find room to sit, cook or eat when there are even just a few people. This can be annoying if you have had a long day and want to unwind. Staff is great and friendly. Overall a nice hostel with everything going for it exept the size of its shared areas.
Positive experience: Great location basic rooms. Our room flooded but was dealt with quickly. Staff were very nice
Negative experience: Place feels more like a homeless shelter rhan a hostel. Absolutely disgusting how a British citizen was treated here. Storage room in open 90% of the time. Wa stuffed I'm to multiple dorms all fall of kiwis. Homeless shelter not a backpackers. Stay well.cleart of this nightmare. Thanks your favorite Google review speaking truth once again avoid this nasty place.
Negative experience: Whilst the location of the Hostel is in a prime position and staff are very friendly. The rooms were very small, the bunk beds creaked with every movement. The communal showers were closed on level 2 and the level 3 showers were blocked and basically a pool of still water. The shower in the room overflowed and the shower curtain didn’t provide any protection from water, which ended up on the bathroom floor.
Negative experience: Stayed here a few nights. The current rating is generous compared to north America standards. The rooms were small, public bathrooms on my floor were closed so we had 6 women sharing one bathroom. The shower sprayed water right onto the floor with the curtain closed. Staff was friendly. Great location for walking to pubs and restaurants.
Positive experience: Handy location for anything at TSB Arena, Te Papa etc. I was in room 315 (own room with ensuite) which had everything needed and no complaints for the price. Parking is a bit of an issue, so plan ahead if bringing a car.
Positive experience: Roommate was a busy boy from 12-2am, in & out of room. But other then that a good well needed sleep & great we could check in at midnight.
Negative experience: Sir, rules are rules... So between my overnight drive from Auckland to Wellington via Taupo I lost my licence. I just needed an overnight bed. Showing them a photo of my current licence, a hardcopy of my Spark bill with home address and name, business card, two credit cards and various other cards they would not check me in. (In a dolcet Irish tounge) I'm sorry we need a hardcopy of your ID, 'tis the rules, and my manager agrees. People have lost track of the intent of rules, the ID is to prove I am who I am, that was proven quite clearly. Thanks for being so helpful. I shall be telling all I come across about this and suggest they avoid this place Nationwide. What happened to 'Be Kind'?
Negative experience: OMG went there for a night, there were blood stains on the blankets, pillow covers were turning yellow, the water seems to be blocked in the bathrooms. Not going back again.
Positive experience: Cheap and cheerful place in town with a great location. Stayed one night with the hubby on our way flying south. Happily stay again to lay our heads here. Had everything you’d need at a very affordable price.
Negative experience: Worst hostel ever! After travelling around Australia and New Zealand for a year this is by far the worst hostel I have stayed in. We checked into a room on the second floor, it smelt disgusting. There was only one working shower and toilet for the whole floor and this looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks, the shower drain just filled up with dirty water and hair! After one night we requested to move rooms due to our roommates who thought it was appropriate to make calls at 4:30am waking the room up. Despite the hostel not being fully booked we couldn’t move rooms so our experience was the same for the next night. Our final night we moved rooms to one that smelt worse and that appear to have homeless people staying in which is very unfortunate. However, placing us with fellow backpackers or guests the same age would have been more appropriate. The kitchen was also disgusting, half the hobs didn’t work making it hard to cook at night, there was no cutlery or other equipment to use. Overall incredible disappointment with our stay which is a shame because Wellington is a lovely place!
Fantastic experience: This is one of the nicest hostels I’ve stayed in. The private room with ensuite was clean and spacious. The staff was friendly and it was in a central location near Cuba Street. They do have free wifi and it was pretty fast. They have a communal fridge and laundry that are clean and easy to use. They also do a good job of recommending places and host a weekly happy hour.
Negative experience: Having stayed in many hostels, I'd put Nomads Capital Wellington pretty far down on my list. The redeeming quality was that the staff were very pleasant. However: my room was quite dirty; the bathroom shower in our room was plugged and flooded; the showers and bathrooms on my floor were also broken, so I had to shower two floors up; and the room itself was so small that I could barely squeeze between a bunk bed and the wall to get to my own bed. I would not stay here again.
Negative experience: do not stay here. half the bathrooms were out of service. dirty feel. the kitchen was quite small. beds were the usual hostel beds, nothing fancy nothing great.
Negative experience: Black mould on curtains, The rooms were very hot and humid at night and have little to no ventilation other than a cheap floor fan, both bathrooms on our floor were out of order and showers were flooding after 1 minute of use. The alternative showers on the third floor had not been cleaned and had vomit in the sink and shower from hours before, the staff do not seem to care that much
Positive experience: Excellent location ** with clean and high ceiling room * for my rating. Wish the front desk takes effort to tag guests’ luggages deposited in their care before check in time or after checking out. It’s slightly unnerving to be handed the key to luggage store room to store or retrieve my luggages. They don’t even check if I am helping myself with unnecessarily more luggages (just say, one more) if I plan to! I guess honesty and trust is given here…
Negative experience: Nice staff but very smelly and stuffy room. Everything seems unfinished. Only one toilet and shower for the whole floor and dirty kitchen
Negative experience: I don’t know how this hostel got 5 stars. It’s unbelievable! The only competition this hostel would get 5 Stars in, is the hostel with the most things that are out of order!!! Half the kitchen and like every second bath is out of order. There isn’t any toilet paper, the pans aren’t good at all and everything else isn’t really working. Furthermore ist’s wayyyyyyyy to experience, I mean why?
Negative experience: Probably the worst place you can stay in Wellington. All bathrooms in the first floor were flooded. Staff is the morning we’re quite rude. Quite a noisy place as well.
Positive experience: The stay was okay for a private room but below average. The showers do not drain well so your at risk of flooding the bathroom floor within 2 minutes of showering which is annoying. The rooms are dated and dont have tvs or aircon either. They have a gloomy feel to them. No appliances but they do have a shared kitchen. The bed was very springy and soft too. The staff asked me to pay the cost of the booking on arrival and presented me with the card machine too, but i refused stating I was sure id paid via expedia - to which I was right about they then agreed. This should be checked by staff however as had I not known id been charged and paid, Id never have been wiser or got a refund. Good location though, easy access from the airport and they can advise you on things to do in the city. Plenty of backpackers here.
Negative experience: At NOMADS, we got poor sleep due to: - High force door latches which cause automatic slamming. - Squeaky, shaky bunks. - High LUX lighting. - High temperatures (in 10-bed dorm). - At 3:50am, other guests' lengthily packing and repetitively using automatic slamming door.
Positive experience: If you're looking for a 10/10 5-star hotel, move along. That being said, a good mix of an incredibly central location, helpful and friendly staff, and some pretty good rooms (both dorm and private) make this a pretty good place to stay. If you're on a budget, I highly recommend.
Positive experience: Good location near Cuba Street, but if you have a car, parking is extortionate. $40-50 a day. Vibes ok, good bar attached. Bar is much better than the hostel!!
Negative experience: Worst bagpacker to stay in. We came in on 02/02/23 for Ed Sheeran’s concert in Wellington city, and due to unavailability of many hotels and motels we chose to book this accomodation- a double room ensuite on 2nd floor for almost $300 for 2 people, for 2 nights. It is my birthday today 03/02/23, and obviously the concert finished late last night, so we went to bed last night around 1am, and expected to sleep in so recover and prepare for big day ahead. But because of the poor quality of mattress, and specially THE CONSTRUCTION WORK GOING IN FRONT OF THE ROOM STARTED AT 7am in the morning constantly from drilling to breaking down the steep pipes for the massive building in front we could hardly sleep. Every single thing went absolutely wrong for us. We came in Wellington at around 9am and came here straight from airport and expected to keep our bags in the luggage room which was absolutely choker blocked, the check in was scheduled for 2pm so there were around 20 people waiting in the checkin line. We finally got our key card at around 2:45pm and got in the room. Really really bad experience, spoiled my birthday NEVER EVER COMING BACK.
Positive experience: System had a mix up that resulted in our room only having one bed instead of the confirmed two. Despite it being 11.30pm the staff were super helpful and did everything the could to accommodate us which was awesome and very stress free. Would reccomend and stay here again
Negative experience: In my 6 weeks of backpacking this is the only disgusting place I've been to. There is no brush in the toilet (I leave the rest to your imagination) and the bowls are not cleaned by the staff. When you open the microwave ovens you wish you've never done that. Dorms have the usual shaky bunk beds. The fan and constant opened window was not enough to cover the smell. Appart from that, great location and the kitchen is well equipped.
Negative experience: The dorms are gross and super smelly. Black mould on the walls. No ventilation. The fan didn’t work. The beds were uncomfortable and had a wrap on them that made a noise anytime anyone wiggled and the bunks were rickety, nearly ripped it getting to the top bunk. Have gone with two stars rather than one because the second night we changed room to a private room and that was a big improvement on the first night though still not great.
Fantastic experience: Very centrally located hostel. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The room was very spacious and comfortable. Would go back there when in Wellington
Negative experience: It’s impossible to get a decent night’s sleep at this hostel. The beds are ridiculously squeaky, and the walls seem to be made of paper. It’s not very clean either. Not to mention the ubiquitous stench. The only good thing is the location, but it’s not worth it. I can’t wait to leave this place.
Negative experience: Staff was nice, but the place is very dirty, I really felt sleeping with homeless , the smelt was disgusting inside the bedroom, I could not use the toilet and the shower, looks never cleaned it before, thanks god was only one night. I really hope the management work to improve in the quality of its services, they have a great location
Negative experience: One star because of current condition. I stayed in mix 10 beds room for two nights. Positives sides: 1. Friendly staffs 2. Affordable price Negative stuffs: 1. Rooms have no airflow so, it is very hot during summer. There is a big fan but it is very loud, you may be distracted by it. 2. Most toilets and showers are out of order; I need to go different level or rooms to find them, I wasn’t told or informed about this at all at the beginning. I think if you see the reviews from 1 year ago they were mostly positives, but the recent ones mostly one-star and I agree. A little story: First night was only me and other three. But the next night was a bit of a surprise, the room filled up with a group tour from UK, imagine you are the odd one in the middle of a young school group. I wish I was not placed in a school group room. Imagine the awkwardness, but hey it’s a backpacker
Negative experience: I didn’t have high hopes as my previous stay in March was pretty hit and miss. Filthy room which STUNK of body odour. Room had clearly not been cleaned in some time. Didn’t feel safe using the room for anything more than sleeping (ie. Couldn’t shower), and was stuck down at reception. Would have checked out immediately if I had a refundable booking. Reception were unable to assist, but did note my concerns. There are some significantly better hostels in Wellington City, and I can personally recommend The Dwellington, The Marion and Trek Global.
Positive experience: Central location is good and staff were nice. Not the flashest rooms but that's what you'd expect at a hostel/backpackers. Curtains didn't do much to keep out sunlight so between that and general city noise it wasn't the easiest sleep--try and avoid the front rooms if you're a light sleeper
Negative experience: The staff was very nice. And except for random dirty sock the room was pretty clean. The windows were banging all night so I had to put paper in crevice to stop it from banging. Windows were drafty so it was very cold and windy in room, woke up with a cold. Heater when turned on it turned on and off all night, woke up several times scared. Found dirty sock next to bed, very nasty. Kitchen was too small for this size of hostel. There wasn't enough seating even so I had to eat outside with all the smokers. Got asthma attack. There wasn't enough fridge space, everything was full so couldn't store any food.
Positive experience: I stayed at Nomads for 4 nights on my holiday in Wellington with my brother. It was a very good experience there. Suitable prices and clean. Have noises outside in the morning and at night but not a problem for us Only a minute walk to Cuba street (maybe 30 second ). Love it, the staff who checked us in was very friendly and nice. And other staffs there were very helpful and friendly as well. I like the atmosphere there very much
Negative experience: Zero stars! Dirty bathrooms and showers with many bathrooms in poor working conditions. Incredibly poor cleanliness in most communal areas including kitchen. Breakfast is disappointing with mould found on the pastry. This has ruined my experience in Wellington as I had food poisoning after the breakfast. Staffs in general doesn't seem to care about the mismanagement of the hostel. Shocking that they are still allow to run the hostel with no hygiene standards.
Negative experience: Friendly staff, good location, but the toilet cistern water keep running all the time, noisy. Heater functions not very warm enough.
Positive experience: A reasonable price and great location. However, at the moment, the combination of extensive construction work over the road together with large, I'll fitting single glazed windows meant it was very noisy all day. No lie in here! Also, poor heating, minimal blankets (I had a private room) meant it was cold. Shower pointed horizontal and shower curtain was too short so bathroom was a flood all the time. Shame, as most of these issues are easy fixed. Hope they improve!
Positive experience: 20/6 had another stay at this establishment The service is amazing the facilities are awesome. You have normal TV plus digital the staff keep it well cleaned and hygienic It has a comfortable laid back feel which puts you right at ease. The hostel in located in central wellington and your only a couple of minutes walk away from the supermarkets and Wellingtons rich cultural areas like Cuba st The harbour walk is also a couple of minutes walk and Tepapa is the same. This establishment has continually improved since covid days and It is now one of the best places to stay in Wellington 20/4/24 Massive 100% improvement in Nomad it looks good all the tatty signage is gone. The toilets and showers are all open bar one. There is a totally different feel to the place. More friendly welcoming. Still very chilled which I appreciate The doors have these well done signs which I think is very cool will add photos later I think it's a big step up enjoying my stay (The trend to use curtains I think is good though hasnt happened here yet but at the price is unbeatable Go Nomad This is a very budget backpacker Very chilled The backpacker is in the middle of the city so convenient This backpacker is the cheapest in wellington Therefore more interesting the crowd The rooms are very basic but clean The facilities such as showers and toilets where clean, though 4 out of 6 where closed for maitenence. The kitchen was old, like most of the hostel needs some work. And upgrading Needs some investment The lounge is comfortable with a tv with streaming channels. There is no free meals as mentioned in previous reviews. Horses for courses probably wouldnt stay again. As I enjoy more privacy many backpackers have curtains on the beds in the dorm rooms
Negative experience: While the staff themselves were very friendly and well presented, the condition of the property itself was a glaring difference. Covid has not been kind to this establishment. The housekeeping could dramatically benefit from extra members, the facilities desperately require attention to correct various states of disrepair and every single toilet requires toilet brushes that appear to have long been absent. Overall, if you are looking for a place that reflects the saying "You get what you pay for" in the extreme, then you will certainly find it here. Best as a short term option for travelers on a tight budget.
Negative experience: Nomads is a well set up facility poorly managed. I was put in a share room with a smelly permanent guest. The toilets were in a disgraceful state as if they'd not been cleaned for a month. You need a vaccine pass to stay but both staff and guests may or may not be wearing masks at any time. I noticed a person getting into the lift unmasked. Also the receptionist had her mask off and her co workers was under his nose! I asked the receptionist about this and her response was very animated. I said "I'd like to know if you're enforcing mask wearing. I want to feel safe, especially as omicron is here. She said" No we're not enforcing it."and" I don't want to talk about it" and she stormed off. There was a sign that said you must wear masks. In contrast the guy on reception the next morning was good. I wouldn't stay again unless there was no other option.
Fantastic experience: Super hostel! We stayed twice, once in a dorm, once if a private room and both were great. Everything is clean and comfy. People are respectful and staff is very helpful! Would 100% recommend, plus their bar also offers great deals, check it out if you're visiting Wellington!
Positive experience: Great location and nice places to go nearby. Nice hall to work or chill. Cleanliness is terrible though, there were pidgeons and sparrows roaming around and eating around the kitchen and the showers in the bathrooms were clogged and dirty. Affordable, ok place to stay, just mind that is not super clean.
Positive experience: Bunkbed are noise every time you climb onto it. Toaster are too old n not working properly. Kettle is old looks dirty inside. Fridge are not gold enough. Bathroom some are out of order. Tap on the sink are loose. Sofa are fully n looks nasty. Etc...
Negative experience: It was a dorm room which looked like it had been being used for “permanent guests”. Tried to cancel the booking once saw the room but was declined even though I hadn’t used any facilities in the room. They offered to swap with another female dorm but it had some clothes used as curtains around bed (by it’s guest I assume). I definitely didn’t feel safe. Location : 10/10
Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting, booked the single room with ensuite, toilet was disgusting, there was a used pad on the floor, clearly hadn’t been cleaned. Bed sheets and duvet both had stains on them. Pillows covered in stains, mouldy curtains and the wifi was only available on the first floor, the rooms are all on the 2nd and 3rd floor so no wifi in the rooms. There’s no free parking in the area only a Wilson’s car park around the corner which are expensive. Wouldn’t stay again. I understand why once you check in you don’t get a refund, because once you see the rooms you wouldn’t want to stay there. Don’t stay here.
Negative experience: Room was not remotely like advertised, Tv didn’t work. Staff at reception didn’t seem to know what was going on. Terrible cheap room, dirty and banged up. Deeply dissatisfied and upset with quality of accommodation. Cannot recommend any less.
Hey Frankie, We are quite disappointed to read this review and that you had a bad experience already just an hour after check in. Our reception staff has explained to you that you haven't specified in your booking that you need two seperate beds instead of one double bed, and you have also only mentioned in your booking that 2 people are staying, not 3. When your friend came down to ask about the TV our staff has explained that you need to activate the electricity in the room when inserting your keycard in the card slot, and since no one came back asking again we assumed it would be working. If you still have trouble with the TV please do not hesitate contacting the front desk so we can show you how to access the TV. We are sad to hear that the cleanliness didin't meet our standarts. Housekeeping cleans the room on a daily basis, so if we didn't meet your expectations please feel free to contact our front desk and we can give the room another clean. We hope you are going to enjoy your stay for the next 3 nights, so please contact the front desk if any other issues occur. Kind regards, Nomads Management
Fantastic experience: Such a fantastic backpackers! The staff at night were great, there is a free dinner from 5-6pm and the price was fantastic. The bed was really comfortable, there was an elevator to accommodate my broken ankle and the bathrooms had great privacy. Everything was clean. I can't reiterate enough how comfortable the bed was. The location is very central and it has fairly easy access from state highway 1.
Fantastic experience: I booked room for my daughter and myself online in advance. They upgraded our beds without telling us Location is great!!!! The room was a bit dirty and outdated but good enough for backpackers. Heard music and noises from the pub next door but they stopped at 10-11 pm (Friday night). Overall, we both enjoyed staying at nomad. We will come back
Fantastic experience: Enjoying my stay there, good free food every night. Very lovely and helpful staff. Clean kitchen and nice area to watch movies. Cheap price I recommend it to everyone.
Negative experience: Sorry Nomad I won't be back. I have stayed a number of times and it's getting worse every time. 3 bathrooms on our floor and the one I used should have been out of order too! love your location but it is getting so run down. More out of order signs in the dirty kitchen too!
Negative experience: This is a very basic hostel. 1 or 2 stars only. The beds are old and slop to the middle. The toilet runs all the time and the shower is miss the drain cover. Poorly presented but the price somewhat reflects the poor quality. This is one of those backpacker hostels that seem to get no up keep. Its only saving grace is that it is very close to the cbd. Bring your ear plugs, sleeping mask and ensure you bring toiletries as there is nothing supplied in the room.
Negative experience: We have stayed at dozens of hostels across the north and South Island at the same price point and this was far below the quality of any other hostel. The facilities were in very poor condition: sink and shower faucets were broken, kitchen was too small for so many people, toilet seats broken, rooms smell of mildew, mould on ceiling, key cards stopped working before check out, poor wifi (only worked in the lobby). Staff were okay, but very unaccommodating. The location is great if you don’t care about the other stuff. (Try the YHA)
Negative experience: Terrible hostel, noisy, gross, terrible service. The room was dirty. The bedding, towels and bath mat were all stained and gross. There was rubbish on the floor under the beds. I paid $12 for wifi (paying $75 per night you would expect wifi to be included!) and even the paid wifi didn't work. Pathetic. Staff walked INTO MY ROOM UNANNOUNCED in the morning before realising I was there. I waited half an hour to check in and when it hit 2pm the counter girl disappeared for ten minutes and didn't even acknowledge I was waiting when she came back. There are gaps in the windows and all the noise from the streets comes through clearly so I had two terrible nights' sleep. The duvet was like a $10 blanket from the warehouse so I was cold too. You completely ruined my stay in Wellington and you should be ashamed.
Negative experience: WiFi is non existent, paid for access but was so slow you couldn't use it. Super noisy from the street and the creaky bed so don't bet on getting a goodnight sleep. Showers have warm water at best but atleast the receptionist was really nice.
Fantastic experience: Stayed here as a single backpacker in a 4-shared dorm with en-suite. I could check in earlier than the check-in time and the location of the hostel is great everything is walkable! Reception staff helped me a lot with planning activities in town like a wine tour, helped me with finding a good and cheap gym and my airport shuttle very early on my check-out day. Common area got a big screen where everybody is watching movies. Kitchen was big enough during my staff and enough space in the fridge for my food, laundry is easy to use and reception open 24/7! Def recommended! To go the Blend bar next door for free meals and cheapest drinks in town
Negative experience: Good place for budget & crash- in accommodation. Wasn't an ideal hospitality but the staff member CEDRIK atleast made our stay better. His customer service was just outstanding. Prime locations are nearby.
Negative experience: First im gonna tell the positive points : the reception guys were awesome, and the room was perfect and clean. . VERY NEGATIVE POINTS: 1- the kitchen is the worst that i have been in a hostel. The toaster and the water boiler was broken, there is not room for all the people food bags either in the fridge(my meat gotten rotten), nor in the shelves, and there's not a table for preparing the food, so you have to prepare the food beside the sink or on the stove(most likely to being used for somebody else), and bags below sink and stoves too, so you have to step aside all the time for people reach their bag. So... Really small kitchen full of problems. 2- And to finish the negative points, the wifi doesn't work in the rooms, just in the comom area, and its very slow, when works.
Positive experience: We had a good stay at this hostel. Central location, good prices, very nice room with clean towels delivered every day! Didn’t try the breakfast but only thing that gave it less stars was the lack of WIFI in the rooms and even in the common room. We were told wifi was free but it is only free in the lobby and with 50+ people on it became incredibly frustrating to just look up places to eat etc.
Negative experience: While the hostel wasn’t as hot as others (given I was on the first floor this time), it appeared very dirty and had electrical issues. The shower drain was clogged and caused the water to immediately flood. So gross to stand in drain water. All the electrical outlets did not work. My friends all tried theirs on them too and they did not work. I tried calling to report to the front, but they didn’t answer. It’s an okay place on the first floor. The laundry worked. The front desk guy was nice earlier.
Positive experience: It's really hard for me to rate this place, because the hostel itself is nice, the staff is cool, the facilities are very good too. They have an offer with the bar next door where you can have a free diner, which is always good. They also have a "free pancake morning" which consist of leaving a big tray of dough for everyone to cook their own pancakes. I let you picture A WHOLE HOSTEL cooking their pancakes one rusty pans shoulder to shoulder in the morning... I can't really recommand the experience. AND, around 1:30am, some random old dude can come claim his rightfully paid bed in the dorm, and reveal himself AS THE WORST SNORER ON PLANET EARTH. That is obviously not the hostels fault, but it was one of the worst night of my life.
Fantastic experience: Nice hostel! Provide breakfast everyday (pancake or cereal) Can drink milk at any time as you want Even include dinner (vege/meat pie or spaghetti) +$3 for farm salads/ chips!
Fantastic experience: The location is perfect, right in the city center. Service is amazing, and staff went out of their way to assist. Timmy in the reception is awesome!! He helped me with EVERYTHING I asked for and was super friendly. Couldn’t be more grateful. Tim rocks. Showers could drain better, covers could be warmer and they do need to solve the overflowing of groceries in the fridge/kitchen. Nevertheless, there is free pancakes in the morning and dinner in the evening in the bar next door. Even if I stayed there for less than a week I felt like I was part of a family <3 Coming back to Wellington I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else!!
Positive experience: Awesome hostel! Prime location and the free breakfast and dinner are super nice! Felt like family there. Everyone there was so helpful, Tim at the desk was so awesome and gave us a bunch of suggestions for our north island road trip. Would have given 5 stars, but the kitchen and fridge does get pretty crowded, so cooking can be hard. Also only free WiFi in the lobby.
Positive experience: Real good prices, helpful staff. Rooms cleaned daily. Free WiFi. Good location and not far from public transport. If there is one thing I can say is the people there can leave the kitchen pretty dirty and would have to impliment a system to counter that. But other then that it is great to stay and friendly staff.
Hey Trevor, Thank you so much for leaving this review! We are happy that you enjoy your stay with us every time you are staying at our hostel and that you like our cleanliness and facilities. It's the best feeling seeing old guests coming back! Cheers, Nomads Capital
Negative experience: Located in Central Wellington, this is a hostel that is listed on HostelWorlds. Prices seem modest, but what comes with seems to be quite lacking. The shower facilities seem outdated, and are very lacking. The beds are shared with bunk leveling, but there are no Air-cons making the experience quite unpleasant. The open windows let smog enter the dorm and invite the rumbling sounds of heat pumps outside. The open Parking can be done at Wilson Parking that is next door. Would not recommend, but if on a budget might be worthwhile.
Fantastic experience: Staffs are super friendly! Very cheap and nice location. Free sauna is nice. And I booked 12 dorm room they gave me 8 dorm room. They clean every room every day. Just the toilet is a bit dirty at night but still nothing too much to complain!
Kia Ora Cherry, Thank you for leaving this kind review! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us! We hope we will see you again the next time you stop by in Wellington. All the best, Nomads Capital
Positive experience: Has what you need in a hostel, clean bunks up to 4 beds in a room with shower and toilet in the room, shared kichenette and laundry, wifi (a bit slow). Close to all the major attractions and centrally located. Free pancakes for breakfast.

Positive experience: It's great, clean and people are very kind. There is no internet in the rooms unless you pay for it. The beds are not in good condition, and the matress are too flat
Fantastic experience: This centrally located hostel has everything a backpacker heart desires: Clean, spacious rooms, a well-equipped kitchen, unlimited wifi (even in the room!), a cozy common area and amazing staff! Remco was an absolute legend! Also, who doesn't like a free dinner or pancake breakfast?! Basically, Nomads in Wellington is the perfect hostel for all budget travellers that are looking for meeting some amazing people!

Our housekeeping team works hard and cleans the rooms multiple times a day, and we are glad that our cleanliness met your expectations! Fantastic experience: I read reviews about the hotels and backpackers in Wellington and read the ones for Nomads and I almost didn’t stay here but I’m glad I did. Yes the bunks were creaky when you first sat on them, the first night the sound of a pipe making noise lasted 30 secs never heard it again and thin walls only when some people next door were yelling and playing music loud but that lasted a minute and stopped, there were girls laughing like clowns real loud in the courtyard but that was around 7pm lasted 20 mins then it was quiet. It was a quiet hostel great for a good nights sleep, hostel was really clean minus the kitchen but that’s the guests fault not the backpackers because their staff were constantly cleaning up after messy backpackers. They even had a person in the evening politely knocking on the door collecting rubbish from the bins. I stayed here for two nights. I flew into Wellington from Auckland at 8am, I arrived at the hostel and was greeted by a friendly smiling woman at the desk she welcomed me in, showed me where to put my bags and offered me tea and coffee then asked if I would like to have breakfast (pancakes) since I was a guest and everyone downstairs were having breakfast. I declined but the gesture made me feel welcomed even though I had paid to stay but not checked in. I came back an hour before check in and asked if it was ok to check in early because I was at a competition and during a break I rushed back to see if I could check in early because we all know most of us want the bottom bunk. As I waited the woman behind the desk understood my urgency to get back went out of her way to check if the cleaners were done with my room and it wasn’t her job to check it it was someone else’s but she took time to make sure I was settled and she let me check in a little earlier. She informed me about the free breakfast and free dinner before I left. The free dinner was good Mince pie, salad and for $3, I could add a side of fries which usually cost $7 for anyone on a budget free food is good but the food was actually good. At breakfast the staff were friendly and showed me where to grab everything got the free pancakes and the guy cooking them was cool to talk to. The guys who worked the desk were super friendly too everyone who worked there were really nice and helpful. I’m definitely staying there again when I visit Wellington next and I visit and stay in backpackers but i’m Definitely not going to stay anywhere else. I love the no alcohol on the premises rule too. I recommend staying here.
Kia Ora, Thank you so much for leaving this absolutely heart warming review. We are so pleased that we were able to create such a great experience for you and that our team was able to make you feel welcome. I think we've got a pretty good crew here and it's so good to hear that our guests agree! Our housekeeping team works on a daily basis and cleans the hostel multiple times a day. We apologize if you found the kitchen in a bad state, but as you said, it can get a bit crowded and not everybody leaves the kitchen as they found it. Our front desk team is always happy to fix things for guests if it doesn't meet our standards. We hope that we will see you again here at our hostel! It was a pleasure having you. All the best and until the next time!
